The Nonpareil was supposedly a great fighter but he came from the more primitive bare knuckle era, where as the Mauler was more of a modern style, moving, bobbing and weaving, combination punching boxer. Of course there is no footage of the Nonpareil but just going on footage I have seen of Corbett among others of that era I would guess the Mauler was more advanced.
Then there is size, the Nonpareil was world middleweight champion but this was before the middleweight limit was settled on 160 lbs, the Nonpareil often weighed 145-150 lbs. I can't see an 1800's bare knuckle boxer who weighed in around welterweight beating 180-190 lbs Jack Dempsey who was known for brutally beating much bigger men. I think the Nonpareil's toughness and smarts keep him in there for a few rounds but the Mauler ends it before the halfway stage.
