I have always said, a proven champion has earned the right to go out on his own terms, and time and time again the greats have stayed too long and damaged more than just their legacies. I hope the same doesn't apply to Martinez, but Sergio deserves to hang up the gloves when he chooses regardless of what we the public and fans feel. I wish him the best, and I hope that when he does decide its time to retire, he does so healthy and financially solid. He has given us some great fights over the years and I hope he goes out a winner.
Against top competition is a bad idea. If he's fighting cans for pay checks, you can't blame him
I think he should just have a farewell fight in Argentina and then retire.
Oh boy, he never said that did he? (sigh) I guess those bills aren't gonna pay themselves
I for one am glad he's chosen to continue. He's worked his *** off to get to where he is today, perhaps harder than anyone else regarded as a top fighter and he deserves a better exit than what happened to him against Cotto.
Sergio is not the type to make excuses or hide behind an injury so if he says he can continue, I believe him. Whether or not we see the same or the 100% Martinez we all enjoy to watch is a different matter and only time and his choice of opponent will show us exactly what he's still capable of.
hes not gonna "continue" his career
he has one more fight left under his contract, and its gonna be a farewell bout in argentina
Martinez can beat alot of Middleweights despite his legs. People forgot that he was on a 5 fight win streak before losing to Cotto. I think he can bounce back and beat alot of fighters. The guy is still a top 5 Middleweight in my book.
I would like to see Martinez get a rematch but I doubt Cotto would want to fight him. It reminds me of the Yuri Foreman fight, where Cotto looked like a world beater against a wounded fighter. Anyone who ever saw Martinez fight, knows that he's much better than Cotto. I'd like to see Sergio win back his title.

It's possible that Sergio's legs are shot. However, I think of Roy Jones Jr. Look at his performance against John Ruiz, something he should never had done, IMO. However, he looked great against the very ordinary heavyweight.
.
Now look at Jones' next two fights. Fighters just don't age that quickly. Jones lost all the weight and looked like a man with the flu. He was pale and looked dehydrated.
.
Sergio just didn't look like the same fighter. Maybe you're right in that his legs are shot. But if he intends to continue his career, I hope he gives his legs time to heal, if that's possible at this point.
.
Otherwise, he should retire. The middleweight division is no place to play around if you're not at your best.
After his legs in the Cotto fight, I think its a bad idea.
