Is it better to jog in the morning or at night?

I'm starting to jog but can't decide if its better to jog in the morning or evening

Advantages of Morning Jogging:

If jogging is the first thing you do when you roll out of bed, then, if nothing else, you've gotten in your workout for the day. Jogging in the morning helps you start your day on an upbeat note, burning several hundred calories right off the bat. If unforeseeable events land in your lap later in the day, as an early-morning runner, you've still managed to avoid a goose egg in your training log.

Disadvantages of Morning Jogging:

Not everyone is cut out to be a morning jogger. If you're in the ranks of those who have a hard time getting going first thing, all is not lost -- in fact, depending on where you live, chances are good that it's dark outside when you wake up, at least in the winter months. Motorists may not be able to see you very well unless you wear reflective gear, and some people report feeling creaky or unenthusiastic about exercising before doing anything else.

Advantages of Night Jogging:

If you wait until nighttime to jog, you can ensure getting some fuel into your body and starting your workout much less stiff and creaky than you do when jogging first thing in the morning. If you like to jog with others, it may be easier to secure a training partner later in the day, and you can start your jog knowing you've taken care of whatever family and work obligations you have that day.

Disadvantages of Night Jogging:

Jogging at night has the obvious disadvantage of leaving you in the dark, assuming you don't run on a treadmill. Depending on where you live and jog, it may also be unsafe for other reasons -- if you don't live in the best of neighborhoods, you could become a target of muggers and others bent on ill behavior. If you live in northern climates, it may be considerably colder at night. Finally, you may be cutting into family time if you delay your jog until the evening.

Well, Lucy actually is not right about the sweating. It is not true that the more you sweat, the more weight you lose. Actually, your body needs fluids to burn fat, so if your body is producing too much sweat, that is less available for metabolizing body fat. Sweating is fine, but will not lead to more weight loss.

That being said, I have been a runner for a while, and I honestly don't think there is a best time to jog. Just do it when most convenient. Mornings, then shower and go to work maybe? I work construction, so I usually run after work, then shower. What ever fits your schedule best. When you jog, your body gets exercised whether its in the morning or at night - doesn't make a difference. Just don't jog too close to bed time (1.5-2 hours).

Oh, and Lucy is right about jogging at night. If you live around any bad parts of town, jogging at night can be dangerous. I live in the country, so its not a problem for me. I probably have more of a threat from bears than other people, lol!

Hope that helps:).

It depends on what you like. Both are cooler temperature wise but the asphalt tends to be hotter in at night. When running in the morning however you have to worry about running out of carbs (energy) from your body still being in a fasting mode for sleep.

I guess morning. It's going to be hotter in the morning and the more you sweat the more weight you lose. Also it could get dangerous at night.

I say morning, but then its also fun at night. But it get really dark sometimess
