Was mike Tyson a good boxer?

Posted at: 2015-04-20
Was he as good as everyone says he was? My dad said that he once knocked a guy out in 8 seconds. Is that true? And did he really bite a guys ear? And why does he talk weird today?

He was one of the Top 12 Greatest Heavyweights of all time. He may not beat guys like a prime Larry Holmes, George Foreman(Young and Old), Lennox Lewis, Evander Holyfield and Muhammad Ali but Prime Tyson can beat most of the old school heavyweights who are either too small or outdated like Rocky Marciano, Jack Johnson and Jack Dempsey.

1. Yes, Mike Tyson was as good as they say during the 80's, but his physical prime(86'-90') was so short that he's known as overrated nowadays. Buster Douglas beat him in 1990 and ended an era of Mike Tyson's greatness. His later career, after his 3 years in prison he wasn't the same anymore in the ring.

2. Here are his fastest knockouts:

1 Marvis Frazier (1986)-30 seconds

2 Robert Colay (1985)-37 seconds

3 Rick Spain (1985)-38 seconds

4 Mike Johnson (1985)-39 seconds

5 Mark Young (1985)-50 seconds

3. Yes, he really bit the ear of another fighter in the ring. That fighter was Evander Holyfield, in their 1997 rematch. Holyfield kept headbutting Tyson and the referee didn't intervene. That frustrated Tyson so much that he bit Holyfield's ear two or three time, until the referee stopped the fight. But we have to consider that Tyson was a drug addict, which maybe explains many things.

4. He does talk weird today, because he got hit in the head by hard hitters and took drugs for years. Nowadays he's still an alcoholic. This lead to several brain damage.

Yes he was. His only problem was he didn't have a great conditioning system.

1. He had asthma and 2. Most of his fights wouldn't last past round 5. So if you were able to tire him out past round 5 you had him. If you were able to keep him busy up past round 5 you also had a chance.

And to answer your other question, yes. Mike Tyson held the world record for the fastest knockout. I'm not sure if he still holds that record though.

Yes he was a very good boxer. Prison can turn certain people into animals so that may have been why he bit holyfields ear. N the guy has a lisp

Mike was more of a short distance puncher/streetfighter then a long distance pure boxer. He KO'd alot of bums and KO'd alot of paid boxers to take a dive for him to gain more $$$ hype and share 10% of future earnings with them all. He feared Holyfield n Lewis eversince he sparred them both at a younger prime age, he tried to scare them from ever wanting a fight with him, after his fake hype was generating alot of $ and attention, but when it didn't work, he set himself up to go to prison with rape to avoid having to fight them. But either way, he ended up having to fight them both at a later time when he and his fans could make the excuses that he was old by that time. Bull$hit. His fans also make the excuse that he didn't train for Douglas, it's not that he didn't train, it's that he knew he couldn't beat a real boxer in a real boxing fight and felt no motivation to train much. His corner n all his ppl left him cuz they knew he was going to lose to the pure boxer Douglas. But if by some small chance Tyson could have beaten Douglas, then he would have had to fight Holyfield next, so he rather go to prison to hide. Most boxer's have many other ways of running or hiding from a fight. Riddick Bowe was chicken to fight Lewis too, which would have been a monster fight, but after getting pounded by Lewis at the Olympic games, bowe did everything n anything to avoid Lewis. Tell your Dad that during the time of Tyson, Lennox Lewis was the true #1. Tyson was a complete phony and fake, just for show and hype. Tyson is a horrible boxer to learn from or idolize inside and outside the ring. His style is not good to copy from. Lewis' style is the best - long distance boxer. Ali and Larry Holmes as well had true good boxer style to learn and copy or idolize. Not Tyson.

IMO Tyson was a horrible boxer inside and outside of the ring. Tell your naive Dad that?

yes he was. in the late 80s and early 90s he was not only the most famous boxer in the world, but probably the most famous sportsman in any sport. In his prime, which was really from 86 to about 89, he was one of the most awesome heavyweights of all time. youtube his KO of Michael Spinks in 1988 - that was probably the pinnacle of his career.

His menacing looks made his opponents quivering wrecks when he was world champ, lost that after the Douglas fight but was one of the greatest HW's of all time for a few years,he loved watching famous old fighters like Dempsey and Louis and was a keen pigeon fancier

Damn good. Aside from his physical gifts of speed, quickness and power, he mastered the fundamentals of both offense and defense. He threw his punches correctly, moved his head perfectly and had decent footwork and ring movement for a man his size.

Out and out thug in the ring but not one of the truly great boxers.

Mike was a very good puncher, but as a boxer he had plenty of flaws.

Was he as good as everyone says he was? My dad said that he once knocked a guy out in 8 seconds. Is that true? And did he really bite a guys ear? And why does he talk weird today?
