Classic match up. 1973 George Foreman vs 1961 Sonny Liston. Who wins?

Hey Toughguy! Once again, great matchup as always.

Undeniably two of boxing history's biggest punchers of all time. No doubt that these two men could hit! Let me break down the advantages and description of each fighter.

Power: Liston (by a little bit)

Speed: Liston

Chin: Equal. Both had very good chins.

Stamina: Liston

Height: Foreman

Reach: Liston

George Foreman - 76 wins with 68 knockouts, 5 losses, and no draws.

Has beaten the likes of Ken Norton, Joe Frazier, Ron Lyle, Michael Moorer, Dwight Muhammad Qawi, Gerry Cooney, and others. He was very feared in his prime, and people were terrified and even crying when Muhammad Ali had to face this man. Ali had struggled with Joe Frazier and Ken Norton, when Foreman destroyed these men. The oldest man to win the Heavyweight championship.

Sonny Liston - 50 wins with 39 knockouts, 4 losses, and no draws.

Has beaten the likes of Cleveland Williams, Floyd Patterson, Zora Folley, Chuck Wepner, and others. After fighting Chuck Wepner, Wepner needed 72 stitches, and had his nose and cheekbone broken. That's how big of a puncher Sonny Liston was! This man could knock you out with a jab. When he faced Muhammad Ali, Ali was the underdog, because everybody thought Liston would knock him out in one or two rounds. Probably the most intimidating fighter in boxing history.

Fight night.

This reminds me of the Foreman vs Lyle war that took place. Liston will use his boxing skills against Foreman in the opening rounds. In round five, Liston has won all the rounds so far, but Foreman still fighting back. In round six, Liston lands a 1-2 combination that puts Foreman down. He gets back up right away, and swings at Liston. In round seven, Foreman returns the favor, dropping Liston with a right hand to the chin. Liston gets back up, and fights his way out of a Foreman flurry, and survives the round. Both men bleeding and exhausted, and both men have tasted canvas. In round eight, Liston will try to box again, sticking his huge jab in Foreman's face. Every time Foreman comes in, he gets hit by a Liston right hand. He gets hit with one more right hand, and goes down. Very exhausted, Foreman gets up, but gets hit with more huge right hands by Liston, forcing the referee to call a halt to the fight.

Liston by 8th round TKO.

This fight could go either way though, but I'll take Liston 6/10 times.

Great question sir!

I'd go with Liston. Liston had faster hands, a great jab and threw explosive combinations, unlike George who swung wildly, always trying to land one big shot. I think Sonny would knock Foreman out in 5. Even George, who idolizes Liston, would admit that Sonny was the "truth".

Very close fight. Both can punch and both have good chin. Again it can go either way. First scenario will be like the Sonny Liston vs Cleveland Williams fight with both land hard punches but Sonny chin prevail at the end. Second scenario is like George Foreman vs Ron Lyle with both have to get up from knockdowns but George end up winning. I would love to see this fight.

That's a really tough question.

George Foreman had a really good chin, but back then he gassed out really bad. If foreman couldn't knock you out in the first 7 rounds, you had him in a lot of trouble.

But Liston was capable of getting knocked out himself too.

If it was to go to a decision I'd give it to Liston. If was by knockout I'd give it to Foreman. It's about 50/50.
