Was Gene Tunney ahead of his time in terms of boxing technique and skill?

Tunney was ahead of his time in that most of the good heavy weights of his day were brawlers like Jack Dempsey. However Tunney himself was influenced by the styles of "Gentleman Jim" Corbett and Benny Leonard before him.

because someone moves forward it doesnt make them a brawler this is a tough question because alot of people argue boxing had gotten away from its basic fundamentals some of the most technical boxers of modern times havent been that technical roy jones for example this is a question of who had it right they had defense first mentalities back than too all i can say is tunney would fare well in any era but i dont think he was ahead of his time no i dont see the evidence of it changing much when you look back

Tunney was not ahead of his time, he did not invent anything new in boxing, he was simply good at fighting in a time when glove size were at 6oz.

Some people say Floyd Mayweather is ''advanced'' and when i show them videos of Charley Burley they're shocked & say ''Charley Burley was advanced'', but he was not.

The game changes because of glove sizes. With big gloves you can parry & block punches with your gloves/arm [boxing] but with small gloves you can not [watch UFC standup fighting].

Boxing rules have changed allot the last 100 years.

Very possibly, to beat Jack Dempsey.
