Is julio cesar chavez snr an all time great?

He is definetely a legend but he got a few controversial decisions like the meldrick taylor fight the first time and pernell whitaker

Taylor not controversial get over it. And dude he has records yet to be broken and fought the best in his prime and past his prime. Or course he is.

The Taylor fight wasn't really controversial, it was a legitimate come from behind tko victory as Taylor had absorbed a tremendous beating and failed to respond to the ref. The American media just tried to spin it that way because Chavez was never fully embraced (by non-Mexicans) in the US while Taylor was an olympic gold medalist and seen as a rising star. The HBO crew has a reputation of being extremely biased, throughout the fight they were only focusing on what Taylor was doing while ignoring the work Chavez was putting in, and they had already announced that Taylor was on his way to victory when Chavez pulled off one of the most dramatic wins in boxing. As far as the Whitaker fight, that was definitely controversial, but Whitaker was one of the greatest defensive fighters of all time and his style was all wrong for Chavez, not to mention Chavez was 90 fights into his career and no longer at his peak. I give him props for moving up in weight to take on his biggest challenge though, unlike Pac and Floyd who are in the same weight division yet have have put up roadblocks at various stages preventing that mega fight from being made.

Every all time great has some controversial decisions.

Mayweather-Castillo was controversial.

Calzaghe-Hopkins was controversial.

Muhammad Ali-Ken Norton was controversial.

Joe Louis-Joe Walcott 1 was controversial.

Etc

Chavez has over 35 title fights and went 80-0 against the best of his era. If he's not an ATG i don't know who is.

Sports M D,

Other greats are always used as reference in boxing. That's the only measuring stick of greatness.

yeah, even thou I don't care for how the ref stopped the fight with Taylor, but I do like how JCC immediately gave Meldrick a rematch right after the fight...

Julio Caesar Chavez senior was a champion that fought the best fighters of his era. He was a great fighter that left no stone unturned. He is definitely all time great because he accomplished many mile stones throughout his career.

@Ray. I understand the comparison you made between the great fighters and the modern fighters today.

100% legend
