Why did Sugar ray Robinson lose 19 times?

Sugar Ray Leonard won the World Middleweight Title with a 13th round TKO of Jake La Motta, in 1951 a fight in which he coined, The Matador Vs The Bull. He would lose and win his title that year to British middleweight Champion, Randy Turpin. He lost a decision to Randy, in London, only to regain it back with a 10th round TKO, in New York. In June 1954, he challenged Joey Maxim, for the World Light Heavyweight Title, in New York's Yankee Stadium. Ray was winning on all three judges scorecards entering the 14th round, only to fall victim to Heat Prostration. It was so hot in the ring, that the referee passed out, and trainer George Gainford would not allow Sugar ray to come out for round 15. He retired for about a year, and knocked out Middleweight Champion Carl Bobo Olson. He lost his title to Utah's gene Fullmer, on Jan 1,1957, regained it on May, 5,1957, knocking gene out with a picture perfect left hook. He lost his title to the onion famer Carmen Basilio, in march 1958, only to regain it by a decision, on Sept 25,1958. He would lose title challenging fights to Fullmer, as Ray had been stripped of his belt, due to inactivity. He would then travel abroad and have matches in various locations. He was Muhammad Ali's hero, Ali would exclaim with pride,:" You Are My King, My Master, My Idol." Ray later would just fight for the fun of it, his heat was no longer in it. He starred in a few tv programs, as well as some motion pictures. He will always be remembered as one of the all time greats, for his contributions to the sport of boxing as well as his passion to helping out the underprivileged youth.

All of Sugar Ray Robinson's losses come after 1960, when it was felt he lost his speed and was too old. But tax problems were coming at him hard, and he made some bad investments, and he needed money badly, so he kept fighting well into the 60s.

Even when he was past it, he still manage to pick up wins, with his in-ring IQ. Man was practically a genius at boxing, not just a physical beast he was in his prime.

Also, fighters fought allot more often back than, I read a biography on SRR (Pound 4 Pound by Herb Boyd) saying he would fight month after month, and boxers didn't make as much money on single fights as they do now, so he had to stay busy, plus he was careless with his money and supported a lifestyle beyond his means, and had a bunch of leeches and vipers surrounding him.

And lastly, all his early losses in his prime came to great boxers: Jake Lamotta,Randy Turpin,Joey Maxim,Gene Fullmer,Carmine Basilio, so you have to factor that in as well.

He got old, and nobody, no matter how good they are beats Father Time. Robinson was without a doubt the best to ever lace up the gloves. the perfect boxer/puncher. I cannot imagine or invent a better fighter, he set a standard that nobody will ever be able to equal. It would be like another painter trying to better Michelangelo or Van Gogh, the creative or artistic talent is unique to the individual, and even other master artists cannot equal the true greats,. The same holds true for boxers, even other master cannot duplicate each other, and at the top levels boxing is art. Robinson was the very best at what he did, and even though everyone else tries to duplicate his art, they are not the artist they are just imitating that artist.

If you fought 200 fights, you're bound to lose some, and 19 losses in 200 fights ain't that bad, especially if you're fighting almost every month, facing the likes of Fritzie Zivic, Jake LaMotta, Kid Gavilan and Gene Fullmer, among others . And mind you, the losses came mostly in Robinson's later years, when he was over 40 and had declined significantly.

I'm not sure of the exact age, but legitimately almost all of those losses came after SRR was like 34 or 35 years old.

He was old, way past his prime, and had been through a bunch of wars. He was fighting for money at that point, and was a shell of his former self.

He fought long after his skills had diminished due to age.

He fought at light heavy, and almost won the world championship.

He fought at middle weight when he was best at welter.

He was not robbed a lot and being black was not the reason for his loses.

It was common for fighters to fight often in his time, so once a month was not unusual.

There were no steroids in his time.

Maybe a little research on your part will allow you to learn more about a man, who most consider the best boxer of all time.

Well at one point SRR record was 128-1-2-84-K.O's. so he had most of his losses later in his career when past his best.

He was overrated...Considered the GOAT...He was a great fighter but definitely not the goat...

I dont know much about SRR, but i heard that he was the best, why did he lose 19 times though, was it because he faught almost every month and was weak, or it was the 15 rounds in the wrong division with an era full of steroids and loaded gloves. Or was it because he was black and maybe got robbed a lot? Any info?
