Boxing: Is Floyd the greatest undefeated fighter of all time?

Understand the question! Of fighters who never lost in the professional ring, is he the greatest? Consider resume, titles, weight classes, and skills...

no way , sven ottke is the greatest ever...lmfao .....at the moment floyd looks the best

No because many of his title wins would not have been title fights 30 years ago. With the 4-5 titles now it's much easier to win a title fight. Ray Robinson was a pro for 7 years before getting a title fight and close to 50 fights. Had there been 4-5 titles back then he would probably acquired a title much earlier, so titles, resume of FLoyd Mayweather can be misleading. Also, FLoyd is without question a great fighter, but much of the talk about FLoyd will always be the fights he didn't fight. He did the best job of marketing his career as an undefeated fighter, but he opted out of some very huge fights since 2006 and that has dominated much of the Floyd Mayweather talk. Marciano and even Joe Calzaghe did not have the skills that FLoyd has, but you can not start a list of more than 1 person that they should or could have fought but picked an easier fight. FLoyd has done that several times; at least 5. And I know Sean that you are a huge FLoyd fan; I am also. But every knowledgeable boxing fan I know that saw the 1st fight between Jose Luis Castillo and Floyd Mayweather thought FLoyd lost. That includes all of the HBO commentators. That was similar to Tim Bradley's win over Pacquiao. Officially he won, but something fishy happened with the judges. FLoyd should have 1 loss, and if he's lost officially then I think that might have taken care of some of the ducking issues. It's harder for a fighter with a loss to pass up on fights so FLoyd might have fought a prime Cotto in 06 or 07 instead of Hatton or Baldomir. He might have fought Margarito instead of Oscar, he might have fought Paul Williams in 06 or 07. FLoyd skipped all of those very difficult fights, and that's what I hold against him. And that's before we even get to Pacquiao entering the welterweight division. He made business moves that keep him from being able to be considered better than Marciano. Sorry, but that's too big a pair of shoes to fill.

Floyd by far is the best undefeated boxer of all time. His skills just set him apart. If we're to say he's the greatest undefeated fighter ever, it'll be disputed. Rocky Marciano became undefeated in a time the Heavy weight belt was the most coveted and all champs of the sports world, MVPs, etc. would look up to him and just only wish they were him. He can walk around and say no one in the billions of people around the world would beat him. A thing Floyd, Calzaghe, Ric Lopez and many others can never ever say. There was always the higher class to ensure they wont say such thing. IMHO Rocky was a cruiser weight who opted for the HW title for these things im trying to convey. Forget about quality opponents. It was never Marciano's fault anyway. The Rock was an unbeaten champ and he did it with less skills, less height and reach but relied more, right there in the middle of the chest. To do such feat with less tools defined greatness for me.

I would have to agree that The Brockton Blockbuster Rocky Marciano was the greatest undefeated champion to have ever put on a pair of boxing gloves. He was a class act all the way, he helped to support his brothers and sisters helping his dad, who repaired shoes. Rocky served his country during World war 2. He fought any and all, was not interested only about the purse he would earn. He fought his way up, like you are supposed to do, he was an honest hard working individual and a great human being. He cried the night he beat up a washed up Joe Louis, on Oct 26,1951,knocked him out in the eighth round. He said, The Toughest Thing In The World Is When You Have To Beat Your Idol. On Sept 23,1952, trailing on all three judges scorecards, he knocked out Jersey Joe Walcott in the 13th round to win the World Heavyweight title. He defended against the likes of Walcott, Roland La Starza, Ezzard Charles, Don Cockell, and Archie Moore. He retired as Champion in April 1956.He retired with a record of 49-0,43 ko's He never bad mouthed his opponents, He did not keep company with criminals or bad elements. He did not smoke or drink, he was not a wife beater, but a devoted husband and father. He never ran afoul with the law and donated to programs to help the underprivileged. When he died in the plane crash on Aug 31,1969, he was flying to a benefit to help others. He was a devout catholic. A true description of a champion in and out of the ring. Floyd is good, but character also defines a champion, as well as skill.. He needs to give good contenders a chance, not pad a record,, this shows a lack of courage. He also needs to clean up his act and behave like the adult that he is, and quit hanging around with shady people, who use him. He would be wise to leave a positive legacy. He should make his children and family proud of him.

No, that would be Ricardo Lopez, with honorable mentions to Marciano and Calzaghe. Floyd is in the top five, which is pretty exclusive company, but he is not the greatest unbeaten. Had Roy Jones retired before the Tarver debacle, Roy would join the group.

To those people who agreed that Floyd is the greatest undefeated of all time......LOL!

Rcoky Marciano, hands down.

Rocky Marciano took out Ezzard Charles twice and Archie Moore. Yes, some would argue the reason why he was undefeated was cause of the lack of opponents that he had when he was in the Heavyweight Division but he took on everyone available and took most of them out!

"For those that say Marciano...Check who has more title defenses and world title fights. That will answer your question". LOL! are you trying to make me laugh?

Marciano took on anyone who was available, didn't matter if his opponent was really good or medio-core. Marciano took on anyone who was available, ANYTIME. Floyd didn't. Sergio Martinez and Canelo are available, but who did Floyd pick? Robert Guerrero, yes Guerrero deserves a shot against Floyd but don't tell me he is much better opponent than Martinez or Canelo.

Being undefeated doesn't mean sh!t if you fight guys who you can beat. CALI D.

I would agree with Ricardo Lopez being the top undefeated of all time, but I have a very hard time accepting Marciano's position as higher than Floyd's, nor do I accept the "cherrypicking" concept about Floyd.

First, Marciano was a champion at a serious LOW POINT in the heavyweight division. Most of Ezzard Charles notoriety is FROM fighting Marciano. I know for a fact NO ONE would list Charles in a pound for pound best list, and he wouldnt crack a best heavyweight list. Yes, I agree Marciano took on all comers, but his fighters were way past their prime or just flat out not top five calibur. Marciano, as they love to say about Floyd, never had that fight that defined him, that nemesis that took him out to deep water and made him fight for his life.

By comparison, I would give Floyd's resume a MUCH higher level of competition. I would hardly call guys like Diego Corrales, Jose Luis Castillo, Victoriano Sosa, Phillip Ndou, Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton, Juan Manuel Marquez, Shane Mosely, Victor Ortiz, and Miguel Cotto "cherry picked bums". Quite the opposite, I would say quite a bit of them were MUCH HIGHER level competition than anything Rocky Marciano faced. It was Floyd DEBACLING THEM that made them look bad.

But lets keep in mind, two of these fighters, post Floyd, Jose Luis Castillo and Diego Corrales went on went on to fight what many consider to be the most violent fight of the century.

And please, can we stop with the "Floyd is ducking Sergio Martinez" garbage? Sergio Martinez is a middleweight, Floyd STARTED his career at 130. Floyds ability to knock someone out ebbed at 140 and he hasnt been able to knock anyone out since 147, its flat out too big for him. Even IF Floyd won that fight (which the size difference may be too much for him) you wouldnt give him credit. Because you want him to keep going up the scale until someone can finally knock Floyd out.

Final point, Manny Pac. Manny Pac's training habits have been slipping for years. Roach has had to chase Manny down to train because he is too busy between govt and entertaining his fans. He flat out does not have the discipline to fight Floyd, and even when negotiations started, at Manny's physical peak, he was too busy chasing women and being a superstar to have put himself in the condition to make a fight with Floyd competitive.

Floyd is a top fiver, without a doubt. But definitely not below Marciano.

Yes Floyd is the best undefeated boxer ever compubox numbers don't lie there has never been another undefeated fighter to land as accurate as Floyd or block as many shots

We have to compare his resume with the other prominent undefeated fighters, most pointedly champions in boxing namely Rocky Marciano (49-0), Joe Calzhage ( ) and Ricardo Lopez ( ).

Floyd is currently 43-0 and has won world titles at 130, 135, 140, 147 ( twice) and 154 ( twice). He has fought and beaten other champions as GENARO HERNANDEZ, Carlos Hernandez, DIEGO CORRALES, Jesus Chavez, JOSE LUIS CASTILLO ( twice), ARTURO GATTI, Sharmba Mitchell, ZAB JUDAH, Carlos Baldomir, OSCAR DE LA HOYA, RICKY HATTON, JUAN MANUEL MARQUEZ, SHANE MOSLEY, Victor Ortiz and MIGUEL COTTO.

Marciano was 49-0 with 43 KOs and reigned as heavyweighjt champion from 1952-56. He fought and defeated other world champions as ARCHIE MOORE, EZZARD CHARLES, JERSEY JOE WALCOTT and SONNY LISTON. The main knock on him is that he fought and beat them when they were already aged, aging and on the decline. The other notable foes he fought in his career included Ted Lowry, Roland La Starza, Rex Layne and Lee Savold which is not much.

Calzhage was 46-0, with 32 KOs when he retired undefeated as unified world super middleweight fchampion in 2009. He fought and defeated other champions as CHRIS EUBANK, Charles Brewer, Bryon Mitchell, Jeff Lacy, BERNARD HOPKINS, ROY JONES, JR and.MIkKEL KESSLER. He also held wins over the likes of Sakio Bika, Robin Reid, Omar Sheika and Juan Carlos Gimenez. The main knock against him is that he fought and beat Hopkins and Jones already on their advanced age

Ricardo Lopez was 51-0-1 with 38 KOs when he retired undefeated as former unified minimum weight and IBF light flyweight champion in 2001. He defended the minimum weight title a record 21 times. But the only notable champions he faced included RATANOPOL SOR VORAPIN, ROSENDO ALVAREZ ( who held him to his only draw earlier ), Will Grigsby, Zolani Petelo, .SAMAN SOIRJATURONG, Hideo Ohashi, Alex Sanchez and Manny Melchor. The main knock against him is that he never climbed the flyweight class to fight against the likes of Pingsaklek Wonjomkang and Vic Darchinyan.

Based on these comparisons, I think Floyd has a crack as the greatest undefeated fighter of all time if he continues his winning ways until his retirement.

Sean Sean Sean...

By saying "fighter" I presume you mean FIGHTER in all capital letters. I beg to say that, THAT can not be written next to Floyd's cherrypicking azz.

A "great fighter" to me must've fought anyone that calls him out anytime of the day. Now start counting how many fighters out there challenging Floyd. Did Floyd hear them out? Nah... Well Mosley got the shot but only when he's aging.

So if you ask me, Floyd can only be called "great" in his choices of opponent. Fact is, he's the greatest when it comes to refusing a particular fight. It's like, If he says no, it means NEVER.

See? We will NEVER see him fight either Pacquaio nor Martinez.

I thoroughly understand the question and my answer is he isn't. The greatest undefeated fighter of all time is ROCKY MARCIANO!

Understand the question! Of fighters who never lost in the professional ring, is he the greatest? Consider resume, titles, weight classes, and skills...

yes i agree

if you compare floyds resume with Marciano and Calzaghe..you will see bigger names and bigger fights on Floyd's list than rocky or Joe

Floyed is one of the world best fighters. YES. Secondly, he knows he is going to loose with Manny so that's why he can't take the risk. if he does look, game over for him. I think, he only fights the people that he knows he going to win.

i wanna say marciano cus he fought everyone on offer when at the highest level but their is no denying mayweather is greater than him.next inline is Calzaghe who dosn't come close to either of the latter because of his resume

He is certainly the most skilled without a doubt. Skill does not equal greatness though.

Yes by far the best undefeated fighter that has ever lived.

For those that say Marciano...Check who has more title defenses and world title fights. That will answer your question.

Yes, I can't think of any better. Although he is not done yet.

If he is he'll stay undefeated

Marciano will always be the best

Haha no

NO!
