No, you do not have to break your nose, if it is broken someone else will do it for you.
I never had my nose broken and lot of fighters do not.

No ,but it could be beneficial to build up scar tissue in the face ,that way you can become more immune to swelling and cutting.

I am considering learning some sort of self defence. Since I like boxing, I thought I'd give that a try. But I've heard a broken nose is inevitable. I don't want to become a fighter, just for self defence. And I do not wan't a broken nose :)
