So to clarify, in order to become the undisputed champion of the world?

Since 2009 to become Undisputed Champion of the World in you're weight class you need to hold all 4 belts from the different sanctioning bodies...

WBC

WBA

WBO

IBF

Before 2009, if you held the WBC, WBA and IBF titles you were the undisputed champion, probably because the WBO struggled to gain recognition in its early years but that's all changed now, if you want to be undisputed you need to hold the WBC, WBA, IBF and WBO.

Hope this helps :)

There are new titles that have gotten recognition.

Today to be undisputed you need the WBO, WBC, IBF & WBA.

This cite explains it in more detail; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_und...

There are few fighters willing to be undisputed champions today. There are currently 5 champions in welterweight, 4 are undefeated and 1 beat an undefeated fighter for his belt. No undisputed champion there.

This is the ruination of Boxing and puts it at comic status. So we have "disputed" champions ... Mr XXXXXX we pronounce you "WORLD CHaMPION" but it is under dispute ?????

Usain Bolt .. you are world sprint champ but we also have another 3 world sprint champs ... hope thats OK ?

WE even have the current bunch of clowns - at the top - who refuse to fight anyone capable of destroying them in the ring.... it takes about two years for them o "upgrade" from journeymen.

God rest Sugar Ray Robinson who fought more top fights in one month than the current top lot have in 3 years. Thats a fact. !!

He would need the belt surrendered by his brother in his retirement.

Along with the others he has.

do you need to hold at least 3 of the 4 major titles in the weight class or not?

Because I read an article recently that said Wladimir Klitschko would aim to become the first undisputed Heavyweight champion of the world since Lennox Lewis by adding the WBC strap to his haul of world titles. But then I got to thinking that Lewis never ever had all 4 belts at any one time and actually nobody has ever done that at heavyweight as far as I can see in my research.

But Lennox Lewis was definitely once regarded as the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world so surely Klitschko is that now, right?

Someone fill me in please, what's the situation?
