True or False? Past fighters/sports icons are held in higher regards then current ones?

True.

Mayweather would WAX Willie Pep.

Tyson would murder Marciano.

*and who cares about sugar ray robinson's record to the guy that mentioned it. look at the fight records of most of those fighters he faced. they were like 25-20, 19-18, 10-11, etc. If Mayweather were to fight a person with that record nowadays it would be a joke. Nowadays fighters fight 50-60 fights or so and they fight people with similar records.

True

Ray Robinson was completely superior to Floyd Mayweather Jr. in every comparable respect. The same can be said for Ali over either Klitschko. Manny Pacquiao may actually be better than Ray Leonard, he is the lone exception to the three you named. The reality is the majority of the older stars were simply better boxers who fought better competition than today's fighters. Old school fighters were tougher, better conditioned and fought far more often than modern fighters, They should be held in higher regard. Marciano would have destroyed Mike Tyson, and odds are good Floyd wouldn't have landed a clean shot on Willie Pep, I completely disagree with the gentleman who stated otherwise above. Gabriel gets a thumbs up from me, well stated.

That's very true especially with boxing fans who have seen the fighters involved and are therefore in a better position to compare and decide which are/were better, had/have fought more quality opposition and hence had/have better careers and more meaningful/profound contribution/impact on the sport of boxing.

The main thing about the past fighters is that they fought more frequently, against all comers and were essentially true professional fighters, they fought for a living. They achieved without the attendant promotional and media hype surrounding fighters of today. Great as Ali and Robinson and Leonard have been, we never saw them pitching in for certain products or services as added exposure mileage or (mis)representing themselves as actors, politicians or concert artists. Fact is, Robinson had to temporarily retire from boxing to pursue his other passion which is dancing. They just can't imagine themselves as anything other than first and foremost boxers/fighters. You don't se Ali in the carton of favorite breakfast meal despite being the most popular and recognizable face in sports in his time and for all time.

Not necessarily. There is a certain nostalgia for former athletes because they are what the current greats aspire to.

What separates Robinson from Mayweather? About 160 fights. Robinson fought everyone who was willing to fight him. He did not pick his opponents carefully. He took on all comers including most of the other legends of his time period. Mayweather is great and will be talked about as one of the best defensive fighters, but he did not fight all of the best fighters in his era, in their primes when they were most dangerous to him.

Pacquiao is a god in his country. His popularity there is unparalleled. We like our fighters here in the US and will always favor them. Again though, Leonard didn't fight people at catch weights and he fought in an era when his contemporaries were Wilfred Benitez, Roberto Duran, Marvin Hagler, Tommy Hearns, and Hector Camacho. When Leonard lost to Duran, his next fight was against Duran to get revenge, when Pacquiao lost to Bradley what happened? That alone separates the two in my book.

@ cali d LOL, Hahahaha. Jus wondering, that 'd' stand for drunk or dim ?

Very true.

obviously true.

Specifically in boxing. (obviously)

What separates Floyd Mayweather Jr. from Ray Robinson?

How about Pacquaio from Leanard?

Klitchko from Ali?

(These are examples to help understand the questions.)

It feels like people choose the former fighter simply because he is a "legend."
