Why is it that the greatest boxer was not exactly the most famous?

Greatness does not always sell.

Oscar de la Hoya & Mike Tyson were the most famous boxers in the last 30 years, but Lennox Lewis and several welterweights were obviously greater than both of them.

Roberto Duran is considered the greatest boxer in the last 40 years by the IBRO, ESPN, Bleachers & The Ring yet he was never really famous in the USA until he fought Leonard in his 70's pro fight [Duran was beat goods by then].

Don't confuse greatness with fame.

Silvester Stallone is in the International Boxing Hall of Fame, but he was never even a boxer.

Some of the greatest boxers aren't in the hall of fame.

Flamboyancy & character sell. Greatness never has sold.

greatness isn't judge by your boxing skills. it's also what you do outside of the ring. you can be the best boxer in the ring but yet not be great.

hope you are mentally-prepared for this question as you're going to get lots of sh!t thrown at you now (by some users...), depending on who do you define as the "greatest". so who is it??

rocky marciano?

wlad?

roberto duran?

Ray hit the nail right on the head with his answers. Greatness and Fame doesn't always connect together.
