When it comes to the maize bag/slip bag i usually only wear wraps or sometimes nothing at all... but it also depends on what type of maize bag it is and how it was filled... if it is one of those big rugged ones that you can punch hard then you definitely want to wrap your hands and put some gloves on, but if it is the typical small one then you don't really even need to wrap up since you are most likely just going to practice slipping and only hitting it softly.
When I have to decide a question like this, my decision is to always choose the safest approach; I would recommend wrapping your hands before doing any kind of punching at all. Why take a chance on injuring your hands/wrists?
