One punch to the face rarely would cause a death, but blows to the head can. The brain gets jarred around in the skull and causes blood vessels to rupture and bleeding may occur in the brain. Not saying that one punch can't do this, but usually it's a accumulation of head shots that makes this happen.
Almost always fatalities from head trauma especially in boxing come from brain hemorrhaging and or blood clots in the brain. It very rarely happens from anything less than an accumulation of shots and sometimes the boxer finishes the fight on their feet only to slip into a coma after the fight is over.
The bones around the nose go up into the brain. The hit has to come up and in. It has to shatter the bone. Actually their is a martial arts hit that uses the open palm hit and it comes up and in. The hit has to connect the vey bottom of the palm. Most punches don't achieve this it because they come straight in or down. But if their is a guy that hits hard enough......
Our brain floats on water inside our skull. A punch's impact shakes up our brain and sometimes hitting the skull, which causes concussion or worse, hemorrhage. Brain hemorrhage can be fatal.
It is astronomically rare to die simply from a punch to the face. Usually death from one punch comes from a prior head injury.
