Muhammad Ali. He attained unprecedented fame in an era where there the main means of communication were only radio, TV newspapers and word of mouth. As one who grew up in that era, I dare say ODLH never attained the fame and popularity of Ali even with him already enjoying the availability modern media including the internet in his heydays.
Muhammad Ali is the most famous athlete in the world, period. Michael Jordan is probably second. De la Hoya wouldn't even be in the top 20.
Ali, of course. At the height of his boxing career, he was the most popular man on earth. Everyone, even non-boxing fans, knew him, and he was even more popular than presidents, prime ministers and monarchs.

Tyson and Ali are BY FAR the most popular fighters even, maybe even the most popular athletes ever.
No matter where you go in the world, everyone knows who Ali and Tyson are. No other boxers even come close to their popularity.
