Why is Floyd Mayweather the only fighter who has to fight much larger guys to prove himself?

Because he won't fight Pac who's far smaller than him. That's why he needs to go up in weight if only to escape that midget.

I don't think its so much that he has to prove himself, but more because there is an absence of anybody in the welterweight division that would provide Floyd with an entertaining fight. And he has had several fights at 154, so why not meet guys who are willing to go down to 154? Years ago, Sergio was willing to do just that.

Another one was Paul Williams who despite the height was very much a welterweight and Floyd vs. Paul would have been very entertaining as we would have probably seen Floyd fighting on the inside!

And so, why not fight those guys?

Good question. The answer is simple. He doesn't. When you're the best at what you do, you'll always have your detractors. Mayweather has nothing to prove. Once he decides to retire, the only valid argument against Mayweather would be if he never faced Manny Pacquiao.

.

As it stands, even the Pacquiao debate has weakened due to his loss to Marquez and the erosion of time. Mayweather will take part of the blame for that fight failing to materialize. However, that's the only valid argument against him.

.

You can make a list of fighters that Mayweather never faced. However, the same could be said for every great champion, with the possible exception of Muhammad ALI. However, being human, it's just not possible to fight everyone the public wants you to face. With each name you come up with, there was a more worthy challenger at the same time.

.

Currently, the word is that Mayweather will next face Marcos Maidana. I think a fight with Amir Khan would be more competitive. However, neither fight means much for Floyd's legacy at this point. The only fight that even matters is one with Manny Pacquiao. Still, if Mayweather decided to retire tomorrow, his legacy is intact.

.

He's not the best ever but a valid argument could be made for him against nearly any welterweight, with few exceptions.

What the **** u talking about! He fights people in his weight class. He keeps moving up his weight class because his greed for the belts is getting the best of him

Mayweather is usually criticized for not fighting Kostya Tszyu, Casamayor, Paul Williams @147lbs, Margarito and several others at his division.

Only people who don't know much of boxing criticize him for not fighting GGG

Mayweather calls himself "the best ever". To justify this he needs to fight at middleweight as Henry Armstrong held the featherweight, lightweight and welterweight titles at the same time, then fought to a draw for the middleweight title.

If Mayweather wants to cash the checks his mouth writes he needs to fight and beat fighters like GGG and Pacquiao.

Mayweather fans and defenders do not know boxing history.

Their is a ton of guys, that did it a lot more, then Mayweather. Mayweather showed up overweight against Marquez.

Ducking or pushying out becomes a habit, so people are thinking he's making a habit out of it.

He's doing just fine....................Boxing is a business, not a sport and he's proven to be an excellent business man.

I only see this with Mayweather. People are always tossing around names that he's "ducking" like GGG, Sergio Martinez, hell even Bernard Hopkins the LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT lol! All guys who naturally outweigh him by no less than 20 pounds!

Do people not realize how small Mayweather is? He only rehydrates to 150 on fight night. Most JUNIOR welterweights are bigger than him for gods sake.

But back to the main question, why is it ONLY Mayweather who is held to this absurdly high standard? Why doesn't Pacquiao have to fight middleweights? Why doesn't Donaire have to fight junior welterweights? Why doesn't Ward have to fight cruiserweights? Why is it ONLY Mayweather???
