Would Jack Johnson's style be effective today in the heavyweight division?

He was well known as having great defensive sklls, a sharp counter puncher while leaning his head back and at parrying punches. What would be a good match for him today?

Back in the days of Johnson, fights were set for more than the 15 rounds maximum we used to know until 1982 and the regulation 12 rounds that's the standard for major bouts since then.

Hence, I could say with definiteness that Johnson's style of keeping himself in shape and developing and maintaining his stamina would be very effective today.

Consider also that Johnson is the prototype of modern heavyweights, hence his style would not be far off from the best we have today. In fact, I would venture to say that his style is not only a match but even superior to many heavyweights now.

Some people then as now tend to belittle Johnson for his title defeat to James Willard but the truth is, Johnson was far from his best in that fight as his supposedly best prime years were cut short and sapped of energy by harassment from authorities and power blocs in the then white supremacist America.

Muhammad Ali the GOAT himself admitted that among his biggest influence was Jack Johnson.

Heavyweights today would be huffing and puffing even before reaching the midway point of a 10 or 12 fight. Johnson was only starting to break a sweat by then. Johnson may not be able to kayo today's heavies, especially the giants but am sure he'll beat them by outlasting and wearing them down. Today's heavies may hit harder but that's not much of use if there's no easy target or if they can't land cleanly.

I dont think his style would survive, not today.

When he fought, they basically used mittens for gloves. He could lean his weight on his back foot and get quite a bit more power in his punch, even boxing off of his back foot.

With the punch gloves being thicker and wider now, his weight leaning back wouldnt generate the power...or rather, the power would be nullified by the glove. He would have to come forward...which is why that style of stance didnt survive the glove modifications.

I think Johnson HIMSELF would be an excellent champion of this era.

I've been here long enough to where fantasy match-up questions generally don't move me to answer, but.....

What must be remembered about Johnson, and his era, is that they were forced to be grapplers on their feet because of the potential for a ridiculously long bout. Because the K'Bros have feasted on opponents (for almost a decade now) that were unwilling/unable to fight inside of their robotic like reach, fighters in Johnson's era would provide a type of close quarter pressure and physicality that they have never seen. Throw in Johnson's parrying skills, ring intelligence, defensive acumen and flat-out grit, he would make the champs seem like chumps. That in itself would put enough fear in the division that fighters better suited physically would defeat themselves before they ever stepped into the ring.

You have to figure that if they really had to remove 6 of Ketchel's teeth from Johnson's glove after he KOed Stanely, Jack Jounson would most likely give Wladimir Klitchko nightmares. My answer is a resounding "Yes', Jack's style would be very effective today.

Styles do not make fighters, the fighter's abilities allow them to have a style that works for them.

Ali had the speed to get away with things that other fighters could not do.

Johnson's skill and ability would allow him to use his style in modern times, he was fast enough to do anything he wanted to do.

Simply put no chance .. jack was a great fighter but styles change and evolve johnson had zero head movement and compared with today his punches were quite wild . i think jack himself had the physique to be a modern fighter but even thou he was advanced for his time 90 years later it wouldn't work at all against good heavy weights .

I believe so. His roughness who disturb people. His defense would frustrate. And his power would annihilate. He seemed always fit and somewhat cerebral in his approach. All that would translate today. His character would translate into good money too.

Sure, it would still be effective as long as he's quick. He'd match-up well and probably knock the Klitschkos out.

I think he wouldn't even make it into the top 20 heavyweights today.
