Boxing: Is there an absence of craft in fighters like Alvarado and Rios?

Why or why not?

The Term "Craft" can be broadly applied. Brandon Rios is a pressure fighter and he is pretty good at it. If not he would not have made it this far. Mike Alvarado is a boxer puncher, the same can be said of him. These guys are not cavemen even if it may seem so since they have a lot of give and take in their respective bouts. With that said they both have lots of leaks in their styles. JC Chavez Sr., Roberto Duran and Henry Armstrong are probably the most well respected pressure figthers of all time. These men were able to come forward without taking a lot of punishment.

This is rare and requires years and years of trial and error in order to perfect.

Yes big time and that is ok because they use what they have to the fullest . Everyone can't be Sugar Ray Leonard,Roy Jones Jr.,or Parnell Whitaker .This is just one of the things that makes boxing so beautiful. Any guy can work on his strong points get trick. He was doing grerat until Andre Dirrell broke his code now he can't win a fight lol. There is a place for guys like Rios and Alvarado because everyone once in a while someone like them will be a Sugar Ray Leonard (ROBERTO Duran). They will them selves to win when there is no way they should be able to win. I love this sport because I have see men do the imposable many times .Only i

Craft is not broadly applied by the definition of the word "boxing", the art of hitting without getting hit.

And your answer is completely yes, the craft of boxing is all but evaporated. I truly hope everyone enjoyed moments with James Toney and the fleeting moments Floyd has left. Because honestly the art of boxing will likely die with them.

Truthfully its because of the money but its a little more detailed than that. Its because of the lack of quality coaching available now. Self proclaimed boxing experts that know very little about defense but can tell you 1000 ways to throw the same 11 punches.

The term "boxer puncher" simply means "puncher that was taught to keep his hands up and has virtually no semblance of defense otherwise". Think about it, can you even visualize Oscar DLH or Shane Mosely using head movement to weave a punch??

If youre asking why, its because honestly learning defense is what will cause potential knockout artists to get bored and leave. You know when I was a kid I was taught to shoulder roll and bob and weave punches before my coach ALLOWED me to throw my first jab. Likely if I wasnt coming up with the money for it myself I probably would have quit...because it was months of bloody noses.

Defense USED to be common in boxing. Its why when you have a defense oriented boxer (Like Floyd, Winky, James Toney) they become boxing gods in modern day boxing. Because "boxer punchers" havent SEEN anything like that and have no idea how to overcome it.

Its just the way things are now.

Definitely! Maybe it comes from their backgrounds? I just don't know. We all love brawls, but what will the future hold for both after a likely 3rd war? Will they have anything left? Alvarado called THAT "changing his style, and moving?"

Why or why not?
