Boxing: What grade do you give Rios' defense Saturday?

Jones Jr called it superb defense. I don't see it. You?

Well Jones must have brain Damage from getting knocked out because Rios has no defense................... NONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rios' defense has always been his offensive output. Saturday was no different. He was able to catch more blows on the gloves, but he was rocked a few times by Alvarado no matter what Rios says. Neither fighter is defensively inclined. Alvarado was able to use his legs better and go in and out without getting timed well. Rios prepared too much for their first fight and had no plan B. I see it as a failure of his corner more than anything. Funny because I think the Garcia is a very good trainer. Rios should have been setting traps for Alvarado instead of the other way around.

Back to the question, I always give Rios a C or C- for defense. I can't fail him because he has enough offensive output to always make him dangerous. Superb and Defense are not two words I would ever put in the same sentence when describing Rios.

I grade it a C+ maybe a B. Rios' defense banks of blocking punches or positioning his body in a place where a fighter can't get off. If you watch enough of his fights you will notice he lays his head on his opponents right side. This Allows him to nuetralize there lead hand while he can hammer them on with his right and walk them backwards. Its a nice subtle move but only purists notice it.

People think Rios has a great Chin. He has a decent chin at best. He tooks his chin really well most of the time and can really put himself in a shell when opponents are throwing combinations.

His defense like most "block and counter" defenses fall apart when an opponent can time him punching. Alvarado did this fairly well. He was able to hit time Rios coming out of his blocks and land that right hand. This is the problem with any shell defense. If a guy figures out your bio-rhythm and times you. You are toast.

D at best the funny thing he has his hands are up and he still gets hit with every punch. If you know that when the guy you are fighting punches when he stops moving why are you standing right in front of him?

yeah he had great defense!!! blocking all those punches with his face was quiet impressive.

What is Roy smoking? Below average at best!
