I'd say Usain Bolt is the best athlete on the planet. His dominance while competing in the best era of sprinting there has ever been, is very impressive. He has consistently improved and taken on all comers. Nobody can get near him in the world championship or Olympic races.
I'd also like to mention his cricket ability. I saw him play in a charity match with some of the best West Indies cricketers. He was bowling against Chris Gayle, possibly the best one day batsman in the world at the time. Usain ran up and bowled an absolute screamer of a bowl which clean bowler Gayle. To me this shows what an top all round athlete he is.
I do not think that he is the greatest athlete on the planet today. There are several other athletes in other sports that an argument can be made. It does not matter about a record, again, it matters how you carry yourself in public. When an athlete behaves in the manner that Floyd chooses to display, assaulting his spouse and children,making obscene gestures at other fighter's wife, records, accomplishments do not mean a thing. What is the message that he is attempting to convey to our young, act like a fool and it is okay to beat up women, children. I am a dad, and I have taught my son to behave like a gentleman, always. Fame and fortune, selling tickets to your next fight should not include breaking the law. Also great athletes should behave like mature adults, be able to speak intelligently, without the use of profanity. We Americans have an issue with bullying in our public schools, but in a sense Floyd is showing that it is okay to be a bully. Look at the work that World Middleweight Champion Sergio Martinez, does with the underprivileged children who suffer from being bullied and donates time money, to the battered women programs. Not just Martinez, but other athletes in other sports do similar work with the victims of bullying and battered women. Floyd's record may be impressive but that is the only thing he has, he is void of class and maturity. That is not what makes you great.
Floyd Mayweather is a good athlete but not necessarily the best ,he's good at basketball for his size, but if you put him on the court for a game of 21 with someone his size like a current Nick Van Exel or a current Spud Web he would get schooled.
Floyd Mayweather has fast hands and a good chin but there are current fighters out there that has faster hands like Gary Russel Jr. And Yuriorkis Gamboa ,they both have faster hands than Mayweather and there are several fighters his size that have a better chin, Mexican fighters in particular.
Floyd Mayweather is the jack of all athletic trades but the master of one, and the trade he masters is executing a game plan and sticking to it, and his athletic ability to go with it is what helps him excell at boxing.
Greatest athlete in boxing for sure. But in the entire sports world I think calling him the best is reaching a little bit. He's in the conversation for top 5 or 10.
He's one of the best athletes on the planet.But don't forget they're other great athletes on the planet.LeBron James who's helping Miami Heat on a 25 game winning streak,Anderson Silva who hasn't lost an UFC fight in 7 years.
Far from it. All those athletes you mention do not dodge opponents in their respective sports nor do they insult or trash talk. There are female athletes ranking higher than Mayweather for that top billing.
I still think Andre Ward is the best pound for pound boxer right now. Lebron is probably the best. Sounds like the list you saw did not give credit to American athletes.
I think Lebron James should at least be mentioned as well, and in truth he might be the front runner. Mayweather is good, but not that widely recognized outside of boxing.
He should be he is 36 years old and he has a 250 million dollar contract.
they were doing a segment on CNN..where they brought sporting experts to discuss who is the best athlete on the planet..the experts took names like Usain Bolt,Roger Federer,Lionel Messi and even Georges st pierre..but i was shocked that they didnt mention Mayweather jr.
im not a floyd fan but youve gotta admit the legendary fighter is the best athlete on the planet..floyd is 2 time fighter of the year, 8 time champion in 5 weight classes, 43-0...17-0 vs past and present world champions,biggest earner in the sport, best defense, most accurate puncher, always in shape, super speed and stamina and ring intelligence.
he has not always fought the best competition available but he's always outclassed his opponents.
