How come a way past his prime Calzaghe beat so easily a prime Hopkins in the US?

It was impressive. First off his first fight in America, his first fight at a new weight. And hopkins was ring champion ( the best 175lbs fighter on the planet ) and since its five years later and b-hop is still 175 champ he was definitley not past it. The first 3 rounds were Hopkins. But calzaghe got 8 of the next 9. They were close rounds but calzaghe won them by coming forward throwing punches and didn't tie up once, were as hopkins done it countless times. The judges saw this and gave the fight to the person who came to fight. Hopkins did do well an cause joe some trouble, but straight right and hold is not enough against the work rate of calzaghe.

If the fight set to take place in 2002 had gone ahead it would have taken place at 168. We're joe is the greatest at that weight of all time. And joe wouldn't of had the hand issues that troubled him towards the end of his career. Back then he had serious power an would still put out upto 100 punches a round. No wonder B-Hop ducked him.

This cannot be a serious question, hence it may be trolling, but I will respond.

Calzaghe was 7 years younger, had 9 less fights, and had a resume that was not as difficult as Hopkin's. So...how can any sane person say that Calzaghe was "way past his prime" and Hopkins was "prime". That Hopkins had a resurgence proves his dedication to the sport and his skill, but he was not "prime".

The fight was close. Close enough to allow judges to be split. Ultimately I think they made the right decision, but let's not make this something that it wasn't. That just makes people look like hopeless fanboys or people who lack critical skills.

Joe Calzaghe was definitely a good fighter but he got out when the getting was good ,he was just getting to become a PPV attraction and could have been in the Super 6 tournament

Joe Calzaghe was in his md 30's when he fought Bernard Hopkins but Hopkins was in his mid 40's ,it would have been a different fight if Hopkins was 10 years younger because he would have been a step faster and would have caught Calzaghe with many more shots.

I think both of them were past their prime, but I can agree that the fight wasn't as close as some say. I don't remember Hopkins doing any damage or anything notable other than just waiting for Calzaghe to attack after the 3rd round. In my book Joe Calzaghe is a way greater boxer than Hopkins.

I will never deny hopkins his greatness, I respect his dedication and I recognise that his achievements undoubtably make him one of the top middleweights of all time, but the guys a whiny b*tch. not once has he ever taken a loss like a man. according to him, every single loss was a robbery and a conspiracy to get him out the sport. For me he ranks along side John Ruiz in terms of excitement, and I am still infuriated to this day how the so called hard man and prison legend threw himself on the ground against Dawson and tried to get him disqualified by faking an injury.

Whenever it didn't go Bernard's way he resulted to fouling and crying to the ref. he did it against joe too then cried robbery. The fact is, he got out worked plain and simple. He couldn't handle joes speed and volume. It was a close fight but the right man won. Bernard may not have been in his absolute prime but he was far from finished. I criticise calzaghe for a few things too but in my opinion he clearly won a close fight.

Neither were really in their prime but considering Hopkins still fights today he was definitely closer to his best. Joe destroyed him and that's a fact. Should have been a UD with Calzaghe winning around 11 rounds. The problem is Americans are disgustingly biased.

Calzaghe was in his prime and hopkins was a few years past his prime and what are you talking about a massacre it was clearly a close fight that could have gone either way are you serious?

Hopkins wasn't in his prime when he fought Calzaghe

Calzaghe wasnt past his prime when he fought Bhop, it was more the executioner.

Very close fight, not really sure how any one could of seen it differently

Incredible how talented Joe was. Let alone how he won 8 or 9 out of those 12 rounds, but in the US they found a way to call this "massacre" of Hopkins a SD. What a prime Joe would have done to Hopkins I wonder.

please die.
