BQ: Who in your opinion were the top 5 heavyweights of that era?

considering that 3 of the top 10 heavyweight of all time emerged out of this era i would most definitely have to say yes.You have Ali Foreman Frazier.top 4 if you include liston (if your referring more to the golden era than you are the 70's)

Not including liston

1.Ali

2.Foreman

3.Frazier

4.Norton

5.Lyle

if including liston then knock lyle off at 5 and dropp liston in at 2

i am not including holmes because his dominance did not start till the 80's

quarry could replace lyle on my list as i view them as very even.sure lyle lost to quarry but he gave foreman hell, gave ali a run for his money and beat ellis who beat quarry.both men beat shavers

i wiew patterson as more of a 50/60's fighter quarry beat him and held him to a draw in the 70's

It was definitely the greatest era for heavyweight boxing, the top 5 heavyweights in that era were

1. Muhammad Ali

2. George Foreman

3. Joe Frazier

4. Ken Norton

5. Ron Lyle

The 70's was indeed the greatest heavyweight boxing era. I've never seen an era with greater fighters in it. Most decades had just one fighter dominating over the others(Jack Johnson and James Jeffries in the 10's, Dempsey (and Tunney for short) in the 20's, Louis in the 30's and 40's, Marciano in the early 50's and Patterson in the late, Clay in the early and Frazier in the late of the 60's, Holmes in the beginning and Tyson in the late of the 80's, Holyfield in the 90's and Lewis in the 90's and 00's and Klitschko's since the 00's. But in the 70's there wasn't just one boxer dominating the others. The greatest were Joe Frazier, Muhammad Ali, George Foreman, Ken Norton and Leon Spinks. With Larry Holmes as a special, but Holmes time was more the 80's.

Yes, and despite the fact that Muhammad Ali largely dominated the division, there also emerged fighters who not only gave him stiff challenge but even initially beat him as Joe Frazier, Ken Norton and Leon Spinks. And of course there were George Foreman, Jerry Quarry, Ernie Shavers, Jimmy Young, Oscar Bonavena, Ron Lyle and the then up and coming Larry Holmes, Duanne Bobick, Trevor Berbick and Mike Weaver who would be key players in the post-Ali era.

Best heavyweights of the 70s and of all time from the decade:

1. Muhammad Ali

2. George Foreman

3. Joe Frazier

4. Ken Norton

5. Young Larry Holmes

You would be hard pushed to find a better era for heavyweight boxing than in the 70's.

Top 5 Heavyweights of that era in my personal opinion would be in no particular order..

Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, George Foreman, Floyd Patterson, and Ken Norton.. Jerry Quarry is worth a shout aswell, but he fought at a much lighter weight which is now considered Cruiser Weight which put him at a huge disadvantage.

I would say so, yes. You have at least 5 hall of famers in there and everyone in the top 10 were pretty good fighters with solid skills and the toughness that is missing among today's fighters. I mean, guys like Quarry, Shavers, Lyle, Young, among others, would hold at least hold a piece of the title in the present era.

My top 5 are: 1. ALI; 2. FOREMAN; 3. FRAZIER; 4. NORTON; and 5. HOLMES.

Actually I beg to differ on this one. The current era is one of the most diverse and undoubtedly the most wide open to more countries than ever before. Some people underestimate it simply because our American guys get beat from the best international fighters. If let's say Wilder became the champ then most would think that the division is great again.

When back in the 60's I was protesting with my dad in the streets of Seattle, I could never imagine that all these black folks who were fighting for equal rights would be that racist 50 years later. Racism is like a disease in this country and passes from generation to generation. I could never imagine that all these black people who fought for equal rights would give birth to the most racist generation of recent times. Black Americans won't even aknowledge a good boxer from Europe, let alone respect him. Truly sad how racist these people are.

I wouldn't know because I wasn't alive, but I know the 90's were a good time for heavyweight boxing, and that right now is the worst by far.

ima boxing fan but i havent seen that much boxing enough to tell but thats certainly what everyone says
