What does 4 to 1 favorite mean in a boxing match?

Say for example Floyd Mayweather was a 5-1 favorite over Canelo. That means if they fight 6 times, according to the odds, Floyd wins 5 times while Canelo only wins once

As for Vegas style by estimation, bet 5$ on Floyd to win 1$ if the bet is correct. Also should Canelo win, if u bet 1$ on Canelo u will 5$

EDIT my mistake, he was a 5-1 avaunt Guerrero and 3-1 against Canelo. Still that should give u an idea on how odds work regardless of how accurate they were

If you're a 4-1 favorite (-400 is what I would say), then that means someone would need to bet $4 to win $1, $40 to win $10, $400 to win $100, etc...

If you're a 4-1 underdog, then it's the exact opposite.

If I bet on the underdog in that situation, then it'd be $1 to win $4, $10 to win $40, $100 to win $400, etc...

Also, just b/c someone is let's say a 3-1 favorite, that doesn't mean their opponent is a 3-1 underdog.

As an example, Urijah Faber is fighting Renan Barao for the UFC bantamweight title in a couple of weeks.

On my sportsbook Barao is a 3-1 favorite (-300), but Faber is a 2.5-1 underdog (+250).

Floyd was not a 5-1 favorite over Alvarez. He was with the ghost but not with Canelo.

A 4-1 favorite is a guy that is 4 times more likely to win.

Amir khan was a 4-1 favorite over Carlos molina.

You will get 1$ by betting on the favorite but you will get 4$ by betting on the underdog. Betting on the underdog will earn you more money because he is least likely to win.

Means that a bet of 400 bucks on a 4-1 favorite only gives you 100 should he win. But if you bet 100 bucks on the underdog, you'll win 400 if he wins.

The bigger number is the favorite and the smaller number is the underdog.

For example, Manny pacquiao was a 4-1 favorite over Brandon rios.

For every 4 people that picked Pacquiao to win. At least, 1 person picked Rios to win.

BTW: Manny pacquiao was a big favorite.

EDIT:

@Alkhali. Floyd mayweather was not a big favorite. The odds were 2-1 in mayweather favor.

Saul alveraz have a Mexican & American following so he had people behind him.

For example, Mike tyson was a 8-1 favorite over Busta douglas. They fought once and the underdog won.

BTW: I'm not bashing Pacquiao but people called Rios a punching bag before the fight. Infact, I think Canelo is a more dangerous opponent than Brandon rios.

I only speak the truth!

Those are betting odds, meaning if you bet $4 on the favorite you will win $1.

Actually the odds are made to get equal money on both sides so the bookies make money, it really has nothing to do with the ability of the fighters.

it's betting odds
