Boxing: In light of Ray Rice, has Floyd gotten a pass?

Is there any difference? Why? Why not?

Not understanding what a pass is. Floyd as well as many other men both wealthy and not tend to get off somewhat easily regarding domestic violence. It is not something that we like to deal with as a society. Floyd was looking at 34 years in prison for the charges against him in his case. He has had many other run in's with the law. He ended up pleading down to a misdemeanor with a 3 month sentence which was delayed so that he could fight and make big money, and early release. Business wise, I think that Floyd has suffered since with endorsements and his ability to cross over to other ventures, but his approval for a license to promote fights may change that and he is still the biggest draw in boxing, until his first loss (if that ever comes).

The big difference is that the NFL is a brand and that brand makes money that makes Floyd (one of the highest paid athletes, ever) look like a pauper. The NFL, to protect its brand, has to have policies which tries to limit the damage that individual athletes may cause by their behavior. They had to punish Rice after the full video came out and outraged so many fans, but the decision was strictly a financial one. If they thought they could get by with the original suspension or none at all, they would have done that just as well.

Boxing has no such entity that oversees the sport's image. While football and other professional sports tend to draw from pools of very talented people, many of whom are from lower SES with difficult backgrounds, boxing and other combat sports have always been the refuge of those who are the "hardest luck" stories, Mayweather is no exception. They are expected to be rough and tumble people with flaws and are accepted as such, so Mayweather would not receive as severe a sanction from the fans nor from any governing body. Sports are big business so money often dictates what actions, if any, are taken by any regulatory or administrative organizations. Boxing does not have any real regulatory or administrative agencies so athletes in the sport really only receive sanction by legal authorities and by fan actions.

I think Floyd has definitely gotten off easy in regards to his behaviors over the year, but that is typically a result of his access to legal resources which he has gained through his wealth. Hell OJ got away with murder. Ray Rice will not be the last person to get stronger punishment for what years ago would have been swept under the rug. I lament that the decisions made by the league are solely for monetary and public image reasons and not because they truly believe that violence against women is a serious situation.

Hell no!

Anyone hitting a women should be held 100 % accountable.

Be a man and man up.

what rice did was ridiculous , and the same about Floyd.

Professional atheletes need to learn how to be professional human beings.

You got sponsors and money up the *** , don't throw it away!

Anyone guilty of battery, assault, and violence against a woman must be punished appropriately. Why should celebrities be given a pass?

It's now moot and academic since Floyd never got a pass being jailed for three months as punishment for hitting his wife while Rice got only two games suspension initially and then expulsion from the NFL later with the coming out of the video of him knocking out his then GF, now his wife in an altercation inside an elevator. Ray's wife never pressed charges so it was Ray who actually gotten the pass as far as civil or criminal liability is concerned.. .

Anybody can agree that he shouldn't have hit her. But I can't help but wonder what sparked it. It's not right but I just wonder.

Did Ray's wife report it to the police? If not then that is the difference.

No he didn't. First, understand that "Seeing" Ray punch his fiancee is all anyone needs to know. They argued, she spat in his face (something most don't mention) and he clobbered her. I think he's 100% wrong. However, in comparison, we have to consider a few facts.

.

I'm 100% against violence against women. In Floyd's case, he's wrong but his punishment was far more severe than Rice's was, BEFORE the video. No video taped Floyd hitting his ex-girlfriend. He probably did hit her but he was punished accordingly.

.

I imagine some will disagree with me on this but I agree with Stephen A Smith (ESPN) in that these situations can often be avoided. Smith didn't condone Rice's actions. He only said it likely could have been prevented. It doesn't make Rice's actions right.

.

Comparing the two, before two days ago:

Mayweather hit his ex-girlfriend during an argument and went to jail for it.

Ray Rice hit his girlfriend and knocked her out, then dragged her limp body out of the elevator.

Mayweather went to jail for 3 months, paid a fine, did community service and was put on probation.

Rice was suspended two games.

.

Some of the other charges against Mayweather were ridiculous. Taking back the Ipod from his kid was a low-life thing to do but was it necessary to charge him with theft?

.

To compare the two would be like Mayweather should be "re-punished" for the same incident. The problem I have with the Ray Rice situation is that he was punished for his account of what happened. He should have been punished and it should have been more than just two games.

However, his story matched what was later seen in the video. Again, hitting her was VERY wrong. However, they Knew he hit her and punished him for it. The NFL dropped the ball in that Ray's punishment was far too lenient.

.

Make no mistake, ANY man who would do what he did should be punished. The Ravens had no choice and neither did the league. But that punishment should have been handed down in February. Seeing the video is shocking but it doesn't change what happened, what Rice admitted to or the fact that he should have been punished more severely in February and that seeing it two days ago shouldn't change anything.

.

He deserved to be punished. But you don't need a video to see that she was punched and knocked unconscious and he never said otherwise.

.

We didn't see Rice hit Janay (before yesterday) and we didn't see Floyd hit Josie. But Josie was still conscious and still running her mouth when the police arrived. Janay was KTFO. SLEEP.

.

Ray got two games

Floyd got three months.

.

Floyd didn't get a pass, not if you're comparing.

Ray Rice got what he deserved. But that should have happened months ago, not "re-happened" days ago.

There are lots of athletes that have got a pass after assaulting their girlfriends:http://styleblazer.com/313502/ray-rice-a...

I think they like it because it shows they are stern and have a backbone ,there's a reason she didn't press charges or take half of Ray Rice's money and went her separate way.

It's never right to hit a woman ,especially when you have as much to lose as Ray Rice.

What does Chris Brown ,Floyd Mayweather ,Ray Rice and Jay-Z have in common ,all if them have black girlfriends.

If your wife or girlfriend is black ,no offense ,but from my experiance with black women ,i'm more than sure Jaunay had it coming ,black women are very boisterous ,rude ,self-centered ,inconsiderate women ,which makes them unappealing to guys ,no wonder they have a 70% single rate.

I have been to night club that was packed wall to wall and i accidentally stepped on a black girls shoes and she opened up swinging at me saying "you better watch where you stepping you stupid mufukka!!!!"

I restrained her arms to keep her from swinging at me and her 2 friends jumped in and we ALL got kicked out over something stupid ,ive never had a problem like that with a non black woman.

There is another situation when i went to a race track and a 5 black women was working at the catfish stand ,as i approached they were like "who's this dumass!" ,I was like "who you calling dumass?" ,they said "nobody was talking to you ,what do you want!" knowing damn well they were talking about me ,just so rude and provocative.

I can name way more other incidents as well but i don't want to go too long.

Ray Rice was on video. The video changed everything. Up until the release of the security footage, Rice was only suspended for 2 games. The league knew exactly what happened, they knew he knocked her out, they knew everything, they just didn't have the film.

The collective outrage from people SEEING it forced them to get rid of him entirely.

It's funny. The guy gets suspended for 2 games for hitting his fiance, and then a little while later gets FIRED for.....the exact same event??? Lol.

Is there any difference? Why? Why not?

rice got caught on camera,
