Boxing: Did Mayweather make a mistake signing to fight Alvarez?

What do you think?

I don't think this is a mistake at all. Even If Floyd loses, his legacy will be golden because he is taking on the biggest threat to his record in boxing. As a matter of fact I'll go as far as to say that he will look even better historically if he loses because history rewards bravery. Take a look at Shane Mosely a guy who was a known PED user but whenever he enters an arena to fight he is cheered because fans remember that he fought everyone of his era and he won some and lost some.

I'm very excited for this match up.

I just don't think so Sean.

It's a business decision as usual. Canelo is the big money draw with the Mexican fans and now, more and more world wide.

They can sell this fight easily. Everyone is waiting for Mayweather to lose. The fight is on Mexican independence weekend. Canelo is younger than Mayweather. Canelo is much bigger than Mayweather. Canelo is a knockout puncher. Mayweather is getting old. Mayweather lost his legs (or wait, has he? guerrero fight).

There are many ways to sell this fight. Business decision. Mayweather might break the DLH buy record he previously held.

Do I think he made a mistake? Financially, no.

Do I think he made a mistake choosing Canelo? No. Floyd don't make mistakes and neither does his uncle/father.

If Canelo can't hurt Floyd early. Look for a cruise to victory like we've always seen from Mayweather. Canelo is better than Guerrero, but Guerrero only landed 19%. Yes 19%!

Canelo obviously studied Mayweather, as he has said himself and that he uses his moves during fights. He even said if he didn't use Mayweather's defense one fight, he would have lost. (forget opponent).

Canelo might not be ready yet. He might be awe struck by fighting one of his idol's. Ortiz was a MONSTER on fight night against Mayweather and he was whiffing and getting tagged with the straight right at will.

I just don't think Canelo will be able to touch Mayweather outside of Round 8. He'll be lucky to put together more than 2 punches at a time after Round 6.

It's so funny how quick everyone forgets how skilled Mayweather is. Never heard of anyone like him. One week he is the greatest thing ever and brilliant in the ring. 2 weeks later, people are doubting him. Then, after the fight, they say, "Oh, well, nobody can beat Mayweather, he's too good!"

the mayweather's don't care how big and powerful Canelo is. they know Floyd is going to give the kid a boxing lesson of the sweet science and dance his way to victory from the outside.

We will see the Floyd against Guerrero, not like he was against Cotto on fight night. He'll be Dipping, dancing, sliding, countering and controlling the fight, not hanging on the ropes and going toe-to-toe.

Alvarez proved against trout that he had some good boxing ability, however mayweather is one of the greatest pound for pound boxers of all time. He may be getting older and his legs aren't as fast as they used to be but his hand speed, defence and accuracy is as amazing as ever. When alvarez has re-hydrated after the weigh in he will likely be 25-30 pounds hevier than mayweather so will have a big advantage over floyd, by giving away this advantage mayweather is proving that he isn't a "coward" as some people would have you believe. Money may all day!

This is crazy reading these comments. 1) Alvarez is not the biggest treat are best of the best. Alvarez didn't get this fight base off his paper than record but because he's a big draw. Best because he beat Trout, Cotto little brother 135, Lovemore/Lopez 140, Hatton, Gonez 147 and so on. Floyd need to take this fight early than later. Alvarez last fight he didn't look good. Only has 1 legit 154 ponder on is resume. You don't fix stamina issues in one fight. I can just see how the fight playing out. People are acting like he has cleared the 154 division.

No he made the right choice. It's not a smart choice but it's the right choice. Alvarez is the youngest, strongest, most powerful opponent Mayweather will ever face. If he were to wait another year then he would only be one year older which does not help Mayweather. The money is there and it's what the fans want.

As others have already said, Mayweather if finally in a no lose situation. He is fighting the best of the best. That's what all of the haters have been asking. Win and he is a bigger legend that he already is. Lose and he stepped up to the plate and did his best when youth and size were against him. Even Ali and Robinson lost. Both considered the two best PFP in history.

No mistake about it.

Alvarez would be wise to wait one year or so, have two more fights working on foot work and hand speed, then fight Mayweather at 154lb not an 0z less .

Its never a mistake for an athlete to look for a challenge. This is much better than a Victor Ortiz, Guerrero, or Mosley fight for Floyd.

That said, I'm going to stick to what I've said before that you need to have 2 of three things to beat Floyd: which are 1) be faster than him; 2) be bigger than him; and/or 3) be smarter than him. If Canelo is simply bigger but not smarter, he still won't be enough to beat Floyd.

On the contrary, I think it is a wise move. As in war, timing is essential---you would like to fight your biggest adversary when he is still not that strong and prepared. I think Canelo still needs some more seasoning, maturity and experience fighting at top levels to truly pose some threat to Floyd and his immaculate record. Fighting Floyd now while an immediate lucrative proposition will only put Canelo in danger of suffering not only his first career but a character-exposing and ego-deflating defeat, one that could adversely affect his future in pro boxing.

No Alvarez made the mistakemistakemistake

What do you think?

No Sean... This is never a mistake. Floyd made the green horned Alvarez go down to 152, 2 lbs lower than Canelo's comfortable weight. Nevertheless, I salute Floyd for making this fight. At least he managed to gain his balls back.

I'll admit that it is a bit of a bad move of Floyd to move back up to Light Middleweight to fight one of the best of today there but at least he's fighting the best available competition of today's Light Middleweights where Mayweather is a bit slower and less accurate at this division.

Maybe the mistake in which he might lose but he had the balls to do it. So he'll be honored and he took on his biggest threat. But it's time for Mayweather too lose.

MD mayweather

I don't see how. No one's come close to even being competative with Mayweather for years. He's getting older and now he's taking out boxing's younger fighters like Ortiz, Guerrero, & Canelo

He can out point any boxer. He has to be the quickest person alive!
