Carlos Monzon 1975 vs Vito Antuofermo 1979?

Very interesting question Irene! I liked Vito Antuofermo, He was tough as nails and had the look of a fighter like the fighters of old and was always in great conditio and ready to fight always giving it his best. I remember when I was in the Navy an watching his fight with Marvin Hagler which wasw called a draw even though we all know that Hagler deserved the decision. Vito fought a very courageous fight and impressed me with his toughness against the clearly superior Hagler. That being said, Vito is not in the same league talent wise with the great Carlos Monzon! Monzon was built like a light heavyweight and had splendid boxing skills and a thunderous right hand. I will never forget watching Wide World of Sports when he took the middleweight title from Nino Benvenuti a very talented fighter in 1970 and I knew right away that he was special. Monzon was never knocked out in 100 career fights and went undefeated from a period in 1964 until his last fight as middleweight Champ in 1970 and is generally regarded as at least one of the top 3 greatest middleweight Champs in boxing history from nearly every boxing expert. Vito Antuofermo was Champ from 1979-80 and had a career mark of 50-7-2 with 21 kayo's and had wins over Hugo Corro, Bennie Briscoe, Emile Griffith and Denny Moyer. Carlos Monzon finished with a career mark of 87-3-9 with 59 kayo;s with wins over such fighters as Nino Benvenuti, Emile Griffith, Bennie Briscoe, Jean Claude Bouttier, Tom Bogs, Denny Moyer, and Rodrigo Valdez and many other recognized fighters having 14 sucessful title defenses as undisputed Champ. Here is how I see this fight going:

The Fight

Monzon would come out firing that jab of his right away with the smaller but tough Antuofermo attempting to slip it and work his way inside. Vito would land some good body shots but for the most part would get tied up when he did. Monzon would tag Antuofermo with jab after jab and some well timed right hands and Vito's face would start to resemble a tomato by the 5th round as Monzon would open up cuts around his eyes. In round 7 Monzon would floor Vito with a crashing right hand. Vito would get to his feet but in no condition to continue as the referee halts the fight.

Carlos Monzon WTKO7

Monzon and it's not even close.

The Big Argentinian was a complete fighter with a very big punch, Vito, named the mosquito because of his fast hands and low punching power, would be brave but would take a serious beating.

Monzon KO5 Antuofermo

Monzon would have carved Vito up worse than Hagler did, Vito was a straight ahead pressure fighter and Monzon was a master boxer. it would have been the bull and the matador, and Vito wouldn't have stood a chance. No way Vito lasts the distance, Monzon by TKO inside 8 rounds.

Carlos Monzon By UD hands down.

Carlos Monzon of 1975 vs Vito Antuofermo 1979, King Carlos won the World Middleweight Title on Nov 7,1970, knocking out Nino Benvenuti of Italy, in round 12, in Rome, Italy. In 1971, he stopped both Benvenuti,in 3 rounds and Emile Griffith, in 14. He defended against the likes of Denny Moyer, Jean Claude Bouttier,Tom Bogs, a prime Bad Bennie Briscoe, World Welterweight Champion Jose Mantequilla Napoles, Tony Mundine, Tony Licata,Gratien Tonna, and Rodrigo Valdes, twice. Monzon defended his belt 14 times before retiring in July 1977. He had not lost a fight since Oct 9,1964, spanning 82 fights he avenged his three decision losses. His record at retirement was 89-3-9, 61 by knockout. He was tall, had good boxing skills, great counter puncher, stiff let jab, and a devatating right hand, as well as a good chin.Vito won his World Middleweight Title with a majority decision over Hugo Corro, Argentina, in Monte Carlo, Monaco. In his first title defense, he fought to a bloody 15 round draw with challenger Marvelous Marvin Hagler, on Nov 30,1979, in Las Vegas. Antuofermo would lose his title by unanimous decision to Alan Minter, England, in Feb 1980. Vito is a mauler and brawler. Who would win and Why?
