Cooney, never fought ANYONE of consequence and won. He never fought Ali, was destroyed by Larry Holmes, and was a joke after that.

Gerry Cooney never fought the great Muhammad Ali, The greatest retired following his 10 round unanimous decision loss to up and coming heavyweight contender Trevor Berbick, in the fight billed as Drama In The Bahamas, in December 1980. Cooney did fight the WBC World Heavyweight Champion Larry Holmes on June 11,1982, in Las Vegas. Cooney lost by a TKO13. The fight was marred by several low blows by the challenger. Holmes precise punching accuracy and speed spelled the difference. Cooney holds ko victories over an old Ken Norton and ancient Jimmy Young, two fine contenders back in the 1970's. In January 1990, Cooney was knocked out by George Foreman, when he too was past his prime.
I may be forgetting somethings in my old age, but I am sure I would have remembered this fight. Cooney came along after Ali, he never fought him. He fought Holmes and was stopped, he did not last the distance.
Cooney was one of those journeymen who could never win the big fights and can not be considered in the top 20 or 30 of all time heavyweights.
