Jack Dempsey IN HIS PRIME vs wladimir klitschko (any age or era) - who wins ?

Most here didn't get your drift. It was a fight held in a time warp with both Dempsey and Klitschko coming into the ring as they naturally are, with the distinction as either classic and modern boxer all blurred out and fighting neither under the old or new rules. In fairness to Dempsey who fought his fights almost by himself, their respective corners would not also have to play a significant role in the course of the battle.

Given that level playing field, I favor the natural Dempsey to beat the natural Klitschko by mid to late round stoppage in a 15 round bout.

His main weapon would be his pure unadulterated courage, grit and determination and of course his powerful pair of hands. Dempsey at 6-2 and 210 pounds of pure sinewy muscles developed in both his hard life and the gym would not be that small against a giant as Klitschko. In his prime best condition Dempsey was a fine physical specimen for a heavyweight as Louis and Muhammad Ali after him. He was also already a modern boxer who just happened to emerge in boxing's classical times.

Good question. The interesting thing about this fight is that Dempsey should be no match for Klitschko at all. But he would be. Here's why.

.

People make the mistake of comparing every 6'5" plus heavyweight with the lumbering oaf, Jess Willard, whom Dempsey lifted the title from. What people forget is that the rules were very different in those days and favored a popular fighter like Dempsey.

.

Some of the rules:

When a fighter scored a knockdown, he was allowed to stand over the fallen fighter until that fighter lifted one knee from the canvas. Dempsey was a quick fisted fighter in an era of slow lumbering fighters who knew little or nothing about defense. He who hit first usually hit last.

.

The new rule, standing 8 count, worked against Dempsey and he lost the title to Gene Tunney, partly due to his refusal to adhere to the new rules. When forced to play by the new rules, Dempsey didn't fare so well.

.

If anyone would ever compare Wladimir Klitschko to Jess Willard, please stop reading here and never read or discuss boxing again. .

A flying pregnant elephant has more in common with a magical spaceship than Willard has with Klitschko.

.

Klitschko has all the tools necessary to finish a small, aggressive fighter like Dempsey in a few rounds. The only thing that prevents that is Klitschko's lack of a killer instinct. He's much too careful. His elder brother, Vitali, would likely do what he hesitates to do. Still, that doesn't help Dempsey.

.

You can best believe that Klitschko, unlike the severely unintelligent Willard, would do ALL his homework on Dempsey, just as with any opponent. There is the outside chance that Dempsey could get inside and land a solid shot to the jaw. Now for another misguided myth regarding Dempsey.

.

Jack Dempsey holds the record for first round knockouts among heavyweight champions. However, again, we must remember the rules of the day and how they favored Dempsey.

.

If forced to play by the rules of the 70s, which evens out for fighters of all eras, Dempsey has little chance. The reason I pick the 70s is because of the 15 round distance, which is plenty and was actually changed in the early 80s.

.

Dempsey would try to strike first and strike fast. If he lands, there is a very good chance that Wladimir would go down. However, Wladimir would be able to do something, anything, to deflect Dempsey's first attack just enough to neutralize him. It would be frustrating to watch because of all the clinching in the early rounds. But Wladimir is much smarter, in his sleep, than Willard ever was. He would use his height, strength and reach to diffuse Dempsey's early rushes.

.

By the middle rounds, Dempsey's face is a bloody wreck as he frustratingly continues to try to get inside. He does have some success. However, by this point in the fight, his power has been reduced to periodic rushes and Wladimir now begins to pick his shots.

.

It's all a matter of time as Manny Steward pleads with Wladimir to finish his wounded prey before he can get lucky.

.

Klitschko by TKO in 11.

Using the rules that Dempsey fought under he would win this fight.

Dempsey learned to box by fighting in bars and saloons out West, he would fight everyone in the saloon for money and he won.

Under modern rules Dempsey would not win.

Klitchko kills Dempsey. And I hate Wlad.

But Dempsey was around cruiserweight size.

And he only fought white guys, so want tested to the full extent.

I would say Wlad stops him round 8/9

Jack Dempsey could knock out Wladimir Klitschko

? but it is only a possibility, but not be small chance

Dempsey is much more dangerous than Brewster, Chris Byrd or David Haye

Then in a dark alley Wladimir fighting Dempsey, Wladimir is dead

Well one question whcih era gloves are being used. Wald fights with 10 to 12 oz gloves. Jack fought Willard with 5 oz gloves that 1 oz bigger than a mma glove. I would say that jack wouldn't have had so many kos if he had used todays gloves and under todays rules. Wlad on the other hand, if he had 5 oz gloves and was able to stand over his downed opponent nobody would ever get to there feet. I know Wlad doesn't have the best chin but jack hasn't ever been hit be anyone like Wlad. Just to be clear I'm not a Wlad fan but i think under Dempsey rules and dempseys gloves Wlad kos Dempsey 1st or 2nd round. Using Wlads rules and Wlads gloves Wlad wins by late ko or UD

Shame on you for wanting Dempsey dead!

Kiltschko would kill Dempsey and i'm not even a fan of Klit.

wlad would destroy dempsey. More advanced boxing techniques in this era, much bigger, new rules

Jack Dempsey, of course. Remember dempsey beats Jess Willard!

Tiny little Dempsey?? Lol no way man. Heavyweights today are GIANTS compared to heavyweights of yesteryear. And the rules are different too.

pick Wladimir from any age or decade - late 90s, mid noughties or present vs Jack Demsey the 'Manassa Mauler' - in a boxing showdown at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas - fight takes place in a universe where its neither the 2010's but its also neither the 1920's - its just some fecked up overlapping time line of two eras ^_^

lol

Who fecking wins this one folks ???

LEARNED - BOXING ENTHUSIASTS , top contributers of the boxing section - if you've been AWAY for a while from the boxing section - i want you ALL to return - and i want to read YOUR ANSWERS/THOUGHTS on what would have happened in this fascinating match up.

im not a reg of the boxing section but lately i have made frequent visits here ^_^

to get an idea of my style of boxing preference.... or what 'floats my boat' boxing wise.... my fave boxers of all time are:

1. 'Iron' Mike Tyson

2. Muhammad Ali

3. Jack Dempsey

4. Floyd Mayweather

5. Miguel Angel Cotto

can you describe to me how this 'fictitious bout' would have panned out over say, 12, 13, 14 or 15 rounds (if it would go that long) ?

what weapons in Demsey's arsenal would 'trouble' Klitschko ?

how would Dempsey have approached a massive figure of Klitschko ?

would Klitschko have murdered Dempsey with the jab and would the fight have gotten stopped in round 3 or 4 ?

or would Dempsey have fustrated the hell out of Klitschko some way ? fighting dirty and hard on the inside ?

your thoughts please Boxing section.

I think Klitschko would win via a wide UD. Jack Dempsey is an ATG legend still but he wouldn't fare well against modern boxers. I think Dempsey could be competitive with boxers until Patterson's reign.
