The Canelo fight will always be there for Miguel, whether he wins or loses to Martinez. BUT, if he beats Martinez, then he'll definitely be rematching Floyd and getting the biggest payday out of the trio of fights.
Sergio is the lineal MW champ, so if Cotto were to win that fight, a showdown between him and Mayweather (the first and third PPV draw in the sport) for Mayweathers' opportunity to become the MW champ would be HUGE.
Their first fight did what? Like 1.5 million buys? Imagine if it played out right what their rematch would sell.
If Cotto loses to Martinez, it's like I said, he's still got a name and the Canelo payday would still be there, even if he won't make as much money.
Fighting Martinez is a risk worth taking.
Stick & Move has a point,
BUT according to boxrec [which is very trusted] Cotto is due to fight Canelo in march of 2014.
The reason being how the Cotto camp thinks the fights will play out.
Cotto has never fought at middleweight, moving up and fighting the best middleweight in the world [the lineal champion Martinez] would likely end in humiliation for Cotto, getting a big fight after a humiliation is near impossible to do.
Canelo is a boxer-puncher at 154lbs and he has always had stamina issues, so the Cotto camp is confident that they can get a win against Canelo which would likely translate to a Mayweather rematch which is a HUGE payday.
Canelo is a lightmiddleweight top contender, Martinez is the middleweight king. It's obvious which fight is winnable for Cotto, and the winnable fight translates to a Mayweather money rematch
Well if Cotto fights the Martinez that showed up last time then I think he has a shot but he would need to bring his a game.
Stick and move was spot on. The Canelo fight will always be there because Cotto has a name. Neither fight is finalized but it will be interesting to see who he fight next.
looks like im gon join the train and like to see Cotto fight and hopefully win against Martinez should they fight possibly leading to a chance for TMT to see if they can conquer that fight also.. If Cotto lose to both of these opponents NOWAY he'll get a rematch with TMT
I like the fight, I like Cotto and Martinez, but if Martinez comes in healthy and improves his form, I think Martinez takes it.
Where'd you see this at? All I'm seeing is the match between Canelo and Cotto about to be announced at the MGM grand for the 8th of March.Who would reject 10 Mill?
Some online articles seem to suggest that Sergio Martinez is a frontrunner to fight Miguel Cotto next year. I like the the idea of the fight even if it's no longer as enticing as it was a year or so ago. However, Cotto can probably get double what he gets for fighting Martinez if he fights Canelo.
He loses to both guys IMO, but losing to Martinez first could potentially significantly lower his purse against Canelo and beating Martinez first doesn't necessarily mean he'll get that much leverage in negotiations with Canelo.
What are your thoughts on this decision if it does indeed go ahead? Do they still think they can beat Martinez, does it have to do with the added confidence that Roach brings to the camp, do they want to avoid Canelo for now or do you think there is another reason behind the decision?
