As far as overall boxing talent goes, which era had the most?

The 70's or the 80's perhaps or some other?

Gentleman Toughguy,

I gotta go with the 80's Sir, there was just so much talent in every weight class. The Middleweight Division alone was one of great exception. Think about it, you had Duran, Leonard, Herans, Hagler and Cuevas to name a few.

Larry Holmes made a big wave in the 80's. Salvador Sanchez light shined and was quickly put out in the 80's. Danny"Little Red" Lopez vs Bobby Chacon was one of the memorable fights of that decade. Aaron Pryor, wilfredo Gomez, Barry McGuigan Julio Cesar Chavez, Gerri Coetzee, Azumah Nelson, Lupe Pintor the list of really, really good fighters goes on and on.

Boxings better days have seemed to pass but I think that this year alone has been exceptional as far as matchups go but by far the 1980's was the Greatest decade for Professional fights.

We witnessed the "Making" of Mike Tyson and we witnessed Championship fights go from 15 to 12 rounds due to the tragic death of Duk Koo Kim.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane Gentleman Toughguy.

Hey Toughguy!

Great answer from El Guapo, and I agree! The 1960's and 1970's were the Golden Era of Heavyweights, and there was amazing talent in Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, George Foreman, Ken Norton, Leon Spinks, Jimmy Young, Sonny Liston, etc.

However I gotta go with the 1980's as well. Not only was there the legendary rivalries of Sugar Ray Leonard, Roberto Duran, Thomas Hearns, Marvin Hagler, and Wilfred Benitez. There were so many fighters and Guapo listed them, and I can't improve.

@Summertime, hello, how are you doing? You haven't been on the boxing forum in forever!

The current era. If the Klitschkos, Joe Calzaghe, Golovkin, Kovalev, Huck, Sergio Martinez just to mention a few were Americans, they would be considered ultimate greats by now. I have been a boxing fan for over 40 years and I can't remember so much talent coming from one region. Roberto Duran was great but the only ultimate great Panamian. Same goes for Carlos Monzon, Eder Jofre, Alexis Arguello and so on. I can't remember another country or region producing so many champions and great boxers as Eastern Europe does in the past 10-15 years.

70's hands down. You had Ali, Foreman, Frazier, Norton, among heavyweights, and Bob Foster, Carlos Monzon, Cervantes, Napoles, Duran, Arguello, Jofre and Olivarez and many more among the lighter weights.

early 1900's,50's,60's,70's,80,'s,90's........... 2000's what a joke. I mean the best fighters from the 90's down in their prime vs. the best fighters from the 2000's to now. Could you imagine the beat downs that would happen.

I thank God ive been able to watch those guys from both eras. Just wanted to say hello before I go back across the tracks. Peace my friend. Great answer by El G...

I would say the era right now so many class fighters, just boxing politics make it so hard to match up certain fights, shame really.

1800s.
