Shorter guy has to get the big guy to miss to come close enough to catch. Or he has to go after the taller dude. Either be a street brawler Mike Tyson forward short arm style....or Bernard Hopkins back up short arm boxer style vs a taller opponent. Which ever one works.
As long as the taller fighter uses it to his advantage, then yes it's an advantage. But, the real life fact of the matter is, that it depends on who the two guys in the ring are. The best boxer will find ways to get the advantage. So on paper, tall looks good, nothing is ever decided on paper. :)
Not necessarily because not every tall boxer uses that height advantage or knows how to fight tall. There are tall fighters who possess comparatively shorter arms and there are tall fighters who prefer inside fighting ( Bob Foster and Chico Corrales easily come to mind ). Skills and competence in using those skills are most important. Ali was just average for his height in his time but he has longer wingspan than most including guys taller than him and he used that to advantage in combination with his vastly superior fighting skills and intelligence inside the ring.
The person who is most skilled at boxing has the advantage. If you're in a fight and your opponent is much bigger than you, but has no idea how to fight and you are a very skilled fighter then it's obvious who will win.
they say a good big guy ALWAYS beats a good small guy...not necessarily true....ali is the example they cite...a good guy big guy with the skills of the best featherweights/technical fighters...any way as the guy above says...the better fighter wins usually...tyson loved beating taller people as it suited his crouching/leaping/launching style.....frazier was another successful small guy....marciano bt louis albeit late in louis' career.....being taller can sometimes be a disadvantage if you lose your compactibility/power....your head always seems to be up too from the viewpoint of the smaller fighter...hence taller fighters tend to box more rather than brawl....
