Is Mayweather afraid of Pacquiao?

Posted at: 2015-04-20
No Jeco. Mayweather isn't afraid of Pacquiao. He fears for his health.

AFRAID and FEAR are two different words, right?

I believe Mayweather wants to fight Pacquiao if only the Top Rank- GBP obstacles can be surmounted. Floyd and Manny are not the only TR and GBP fighters that are prevented from fighting each other if you will only care to note since 2010.

If you cannot understand what's happening by keeping on your shallow reasoning as Floyd being afraid of and ducking Pacquiao, you don't know a **** about boxing. Cowardice has never had a place in boxing from time immemorial. Boxing is such a noble sport that has to be spared from dimwits like you, sir!

Floyd Mayweather and Bob Arum have bad blood and they refuse to bend to the others demands ,that's a big part of the reason why the fight hasn't happened yet.

Manny Pacquiao's contract with Top Rank expires at the end of 2014 ,that is when serious negotiations between Mayweather and Pacquiao will be made for a May 2nd ,2015 showdown ,just like Cotto did when his contract with Top Rank expired at the end of 2011 ,on to fight Floyd the following May of 2012.

A boxer of Mayweather's calibre is not afraid of any opponent. They are long past the bang - bang period...

When a guy reached the elite standard of boxing where Mayweather is currently at, it's more of a chess match... Floyd must see through the hype, and determine what tactics are required to stop the man..

I guess Floyd has fought most types of boxers - he seems to thrive on the attacking styles more than anything..?

I would admire Mayweather & Pacquiao in equal measures, both are highly successful in their chosen sport. Yet, I think Mayweather has a certain arrogance about him?.. You cross him once, and he drops you like a hot cake...

Bob Arum made some remark that upset Floyd.. Probably some off the cuff comment that he didn't give a second though to... Yet Floyd took it personally....

To this day, he will not do business with Arum.. (As in: Not put money in Arums pocket)

There is a lot of politics in Mayweathers life at the moment.. I think he will be glad to see 50-0 and then retire, never to darken boxings door again..

Is he afraid - No.

I am of the opinion that he is NOT afraid of Pacquiao. First thing we need to clarify is that there have only really been two serious negotiations (if you include the infamous phone call). The others are just fan made and never took place. I'm only going to talk about the negotiations for the fight happening in 2010 since everyone says it's 4 years overdue or whatever, that's when it was seemingly superheated.

So lets take a time machine back to may 2009, number 1 p4p fighter Pacquiao is ready to take on Hatton, just days before the fight Floyd holds a press conference to announce his return from retirement. Do you think this is a coincidence? Mayweather knew full well this would spark a frenzy about that potential matchup and it got people thinking after Lampley initially pointed out in Pacquiao vs Oscar that he was beating him in more impressive fashion. I just don't understand at this point why he would announce his return knowing that people are going to talk about a matchup with the guy he is supposedly terrified of.

Anyway fast forward to december 2009, this is the ONLY time there was concrete negotiations between both camps with the aim of making a fight for sometime in 2010. Great everything is going well... both sides are keen on the fight and preliminary demands take place. Floyd wants it at 154 with 10 ounce gloves but accepts it will have to happen at 147 with 8 ounce gloves, no problem. Team Pacquiao is concerned about Mayweather's size after his failure to make weight against Marquez and they request Mayweather to pay an substantial 10 MILLION per 1lb AFTER THE WEIGH IN , but that's ok Mayweather agrees. Next hurdle, Mayweather and HBO would prefer the fight to take place in May so they could have more time to promote but Pacquiao wants it in march 13 2010 because he has the elections in May, ok it's such a big fight so it shouldn't be a problem, agreed. 50-50 split is agreed on in these negotiations as both fighters were earning around the same at that time. Then we all know what happened with the random drug testing, Pacquiao refuses to take part which ultimately killed the fight... something that he is now ok with doing.

Based on the way this negotiation went i just struggle to see how Floyd is afraid to be honest. Some of the demands made like the 10million per 1lb after the weigh in seemed far more unnecessary than RBT. At first i was of course disappointed that it killed the fight but at the same time i admired Pacquiao for having pride and standing behind something he truly believed he shouldn't do, but then two things happened: 1) he accepted the RBT procedure in 2012 so now i'm thinking wtf i thought you said it would weaken you? 2) I realised Mayweather is taking the EXACT same tests so i'm thinking what's the problem? why would it put you at a disadvantage if your opponent is doing the same thing? People act like Mayweather is making Pacquiao do it but he doesn't have to do it. Thats what i originally thought because of the way fans were acting.

You'd be suprised how close this fight was to happening, every little detail was agreed.... except the RBT. Check out the article below.

Floyd has been fighting professionally for nearly 20 years since he was a teenager. I don't think he'd fear any fighter. Each fight for him is just another day at the office. It's losing or getting that first L on his record that he's scared of. And Pac is very capable of inflicting that first L.

youre a newbee and you have a keen observation but youre not askin the right question to get a right answer... am afraid youre question leads to more questions. floyd bein afraid to fight an opponent particularly pac is debatable, how can he? he already beat too many champs and some of them are HOF and ATG.

heres a tip, try to listen to his past press releases, then youll realize his own mouth betrays him, why most floyd fans here chose to give a deaf ear...there youll learn to know whats he is afraid of... its aint a matter of who but what?

lets just put this way..

Floyd is Floyd fans God..

Whatever Floyd says .. Floyd fans says AMEN!!!

so if Floyd says he won;'t fight Pacquiao .. all Floyd fans says..

Pacquaio =

1. not needed to fight by Floyd

2. Bob Arum

3. 40 Million

4. PED

5. MOney Split.

other boxing fans wants Maynever vs Pacman

only Floyd fans doesn't want this fight..

I seriously doubt that. I don't see anything from Pacquiao that poses any threat to him. In fact his style plays into Floyd's hands. It's the politics of boxing that a lot of people ignore.

The thing is, Mayweather IS perceived as being scared, so if he loses to Manny, Manny will supersede him as the greatest boxer of this era, and Floyd's legacy will take a massive hit.

Ok. I'm trying to understand the logic here, Mayweather fans keep defending him and his excuses. I mean, a man is challenging him to fight, and he just won't accept.

I know that Mayweather is a very skilled, competent and ferocious boxer and one of the greatest in boxing. He can dictate what he wants, chooses who he fights, I mean it's a free world.

But why won't he fight Pacquiao? I mean if your that great and someone you think below you is challenging you with millions of dollars going into your pocket, and the MOST anticipated fight in recent boxing history and all boxing fans WANT IT. Then why won't you do it? Why come up with all the excuses?

If you're the greatest, why won't you fight?

Even though Pacquiao lost 2 times in a row he's definitely a top contender.

In a non-biased mindset such as myself, I can say that he is ducking Pacquiao.

Now what is your opinion of all this?

No, he is afraid of losing to Pacquiao, but not the man himself. Actually Manny is a pretty easy going and nice guy, why should Floyd fear him?

yes he is he said so himself he said i wont fight paq because im scarred for my health. i dont see how anyone can argue against his own words

SO SCARED HE WON'T FIGHT PAC UNLESS IT'S HIS LAST FIGHT OR IF PAC LOOKS SLOWER AND LESS FIERCE STAMINA. JUST LIKE HOW SUGAR RAY LEONARD AVOIDED HAGLER UNTIL HE SAW WHAT HE LIKED AFTER HAGLER HAD A CRAZY EXAUSTING WAR WITH JOHN MUGABI.
